Homogenization in non-linear dynamics due to frictional contact

open access: yes, 2008
International audienceThis work is devoted to a study of the classical homogenization process and its influence on the behavior of a composite under non-linear dynamic loading due to contact and friction.

High Center‐of‐Mass, Multi‐Legged Soft Robots Powered by Geometrically Encoded Liquid Crystal Elastomer Arc Appendages

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by the octopus and the golden wheel spider, soft robots with liquid crystal elastomer arc fibers as appendages are fabricated to transcend surface constraints through an elevated center of mass and minimal contact footprints. By leveraging curvature‐encoded deformation‐recovery cycles, these robots exhibit contractile, torsional, and flexural ...

FCLIB: a collection of discrete 3D Frictional Contact problems

open access: yes, 2014
The goal of this work is to set up a collection of 3D Frictional Contact (3DFC) problems. The collection will provide a standard framework for testing available and new algorithms for solving discrete frictional contact problems.

Engineering Layered Magnetic Hydrogels for Cell Placement via Shear and Magnetic Field‐Induced Assembly

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Magnetic particles are organized into layered architectures by combining shear flow and magnetic fields, with the resulting structures governed by appropriate Mason numbers. The programmed assemblies provide spatial guidance for cell placement, linking field‐controlled self‐assembly, flow‐induced structuring and biological organization.

Measuring and Manipulating Density of States in Two‐Dimensional Materials With Electrochemical Capacitance

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
We report electrochemical quantum capacitance spectroscopy as an ambient, in situ probe for defect‐mediated electronic structure at 2D material interfaces. Using monolayer MoS2, the method resolves band edges and vacancy states, tracks sulfur‐vacancy evolution during hydrogen evolution, and links interfacial density‐of‐states changes to nearly ...

Influence of Carbon Nanoparticles on Electrically Induced Wear of Grease‐Lubricated Steels

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
When an electric current enters a pair of rubbing surfaces, enormous damage takes place. In this research, how such damage occurs in the presence of protective grease and the mitigation with added carbon nanoparticles, were investigated. It was discovered that those particles regulate transport and interfacial electrical stability of the grease ...

A Review of Tribological Behavior of Wire Ropes: Generation, Characteristics, Effects, and Protection

open access: yesLubricants
Steel wire ropes are key load-bearing components in systems such as mine hoisting, bridge cableways, elevators, and cranes, and frictional wear is among the earliest occurring and most easily accumulated form of damage.

Evaluation of Frictional Contact Stresses in Spur and Helical Gears

open access: yes, 2017
Stress analysis of gears has become a popular area of research in order to reduce the failures and to optimize the design of gears. Friction between gears causes detrimental effects on gear surface contacts, but there is no effective method to determine ...

A Survey of Interlayer Interaction Models for Graphene and Other 2D Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Van der Waals interactions arising from electronic polarization at atomically close interfaces generate corrugated interlayer energy landscapes that govern normal and tangential tractions. This review presents an overview of quantum, atomistic, analytical, and continuum modeling approaches, highlighting their roles across length scales in capturing ...

A conforming frictional beam contact model

open access: yes
We develop a model for predicting the mechanical behavior of a system of slender one-dimensional bodies (fibers or beams) interacting via frictional contact.
