Frost heave in compressible soils

open access: yes, 2016
We develop a mathematical model of frost heave in compressible soils based on a morphological instability of the ice–soil interface. The theory accounts for heave and soil consolidation, while avoiding the frozen fringe assumption. Using a Lie-B¨acklund transformation an analytical solution to the governing equations is found. Two solidification regimes

Progressive Lifting of Shallow Sewers Due to Frost Heave Actions: Investigation of a Lumped Parameter Frost Heave Model

open access: yes, 2003
The objective of this report is to complete work undertaken at the University Minnesota in the mid 1990's. This work was directed at developing an understanding of frost heaves in relationship to the lifting of buried objects such as shallow sewers.

A potential new frost heave mechanism in high-speed railway embankments

open access: yes
Substantial frost heave has been observed in coarse fills in high-speed railway embankments. These coarse fills have very low water contents, and are located above the groundwater table. In an attempt to explain the unexpected frost heave, it is proposed
