Floatability of polymer materials modulated by frothers

Waste Management, 2013
Flotation tests of 35 polymer materials were carried out to investigate their floatability modulated by frothers. Results of flotation tests demonstrated that polymer resins and soft PVC showed high floatability, floatability of hard PVC plastics was relatively low and was related to the frothers, and there exists significant difference in the ...

Colorimetric determination of common industrial frothers

Minerals Engineering, 2005
Abstract Methylisobutyl carbinol (MIBC) and a methoxy polypropylene glycol (Dowfroth 250) were determined by a colorimetric procedure using salicylaldehyde. Linear calibration curves in absorption spectrophotometry were obtained for MIBC between 0.05 and 0.2 mg/sample at ∼520 nm, and for D250 between 0.2 and 0.5 mg/sample at ∼535 nm.

An improved class of flotation frothers

International Journal of Mineral Processing, 2000
Abstract Incorporating certain functional groups or atoms into surfactant molecules can have a dramatic impact on the surface activity of the chemicals. This paper summarizes how the introduction of sulfur atom into polyalkylene oxide frother molecules increased metal recovery, both copper and molybdenum, in the flotation of porphyrry ores.

Flotation frothers for low‐rank coals

Journal of Applied Chemistry, 1955
AbstractA number of aliphatic alcohols and acids, phenols and other heteropolar compounds were studied as flotation frothers for a tetralin‐conditioned low‐rank coal. The effects of these reagents, in the absence of coal, on the static surface tension of water and on froth formation and the character of bubble streams in aqueous solutions were ...

Surface tension of collector‐frother mixtures

Journal of Applied Chemistry, 1967
AbstractThio‐compound collectors and frothers produce, in aqueous solution, a smaller lowering of surface tension than other collectors. the surface tension of a solution of a collector‐frother mixture is intermediate between those of the individual reagent solutions, when the concentrations of both are in the vicinity of surface saturation, but when ...

Frothers and Flotation Froth

Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy Review, 1993
Good flotation frothers have branched hydrocarbon radicals and form loosely packed gaseous films at the liquid/gas interface. Their hydrophile-lipophile properties must be properly balanced and for most good frothers the HLB values are close to 6. This allows them to co-operate actively with the adsorbed collector in the moment of particle-to-bubble ...

Effect of frothers on bubble size

International Journal of Mineral Processing, 2005
Abstract The size of bubbles in flotation cells was measured using the UCT bubble size meter and the HUT bubble size analyser. While both methods provided similar critical coalescence concentration (CCC) values for the three tested frothers, they also revealed important differences.

Characterizing Frothers using Water Carrying Rate

Canadian Metallurgical Quarterly, 2007
AbstractThe recovery of fine hydrophilic particles in flotation is related to the recovery of water. Water is carried by bubbles into and through the froth. The amount transported (entrained) depends on bubble size, gas rate and the subject of this paper, frother type.

Characterizing Frothers using Gas Hold-Up

Canadian Metallurgical Quarterly, 2007
AbstractA way to characterize (classify) frothers using gas hold-up as a surrogate for bubble size was explored. Nine surfactants with a range in chemical structures were selected and tested in a bubble column instrumented to measure gas hold-up and superficial gas velocity. A correlation between frother type and gas hold-up was observed: for alcohols,

Frothing Properties of Amine/Frother Combinations

Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration, 2019
Methods to determine frother functions, control of bubble size and froth properties, are now widely used. Some collectors also exhibit frother functions which are less understood. Using a water-air system in a mini-mechanical flotation cell setup, this paper determines bubble size and water overflow rate for three amine collectors: one primary amine ...
