Effect of frother blends on hydrodynamic properties

International Journal of Mineral Processing, 2013
Abstract The effect of blending polyglycols (F150 and DF250) with alcohols (MIBC and pentanol) on bubble size, gas holdup and froth height in a two-phase system has been determined. A synergistic effect on froth height was observed accompanied by a change in bubble size: below the alcohol critical coalescence concentration (CCC) the addition of small

Frother characterisation using dynamic surface tension measurements

International Journal of Mineral Processing, 2002
There is as yet no accepted method of predicting flotation frother performance in plant processes based on laboratory scale characterisation techniques. This paper investigates the use of dynamic surface tension, using the maximum bubble pressure method, as a means of evaluating frother performance. The method has been refined to facilitate measurement

Frother persistence: A measure using gas holdup

Minerals Engineering, 2009
Persistence here refers to the how long a frother remains effective in producing small bubbles, one of its prime functions in flotation. One way to evaluate is to track gas holdup over time while air is sparged into a column: if frother is depleted bubble size will start to increase consequently increasing bubble rise velocity and hence decreasing gas ...

Development of new frothers through hydrodynamic characterization

Minerals Engineering, 2008
Abstract The paper describes the background to development of a methodology to characterize frothers based on two-phase tests using gas holdup and froth height as the hydrodynamic and froth parameters, respectively. The data showed patterns, that frothers could be grouped into classes, and could be moved from one class to another by chemical ...

Gas dispersion properties of collector/frother blends

Minerals Engineering, 2016
Abstract The addition of frothers in the flotation process has a significant effect on the hydrodynamic properties of the pulp phase as well as the stability of the froth phase. Some flotation collectors have been reported to have similar hydrodynamic effects, but there are few published quantitative studies. In this paper, the pure forms of the main

Synergistic Effect of Frother on Coal Flotation

Coal Preparation, 1986
Overall response to flotation of coal fines is improved by using mixtures of pine oil and methyl isobutyl carbinol as frother instead of either of them alone. Measurements of static froth height and surface tension of aqueous solutions of the frother are used to study the synergistic effect and to arrive at an optimum frother composition.

Comparative real-time characterization of frother bubble thin films

Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 2005
Methylisobutyl carbinol (MIBC) and methoxy polypropylene glycol (Dowfroth 250) bubble thin films were characterized by composition and thickness determinations, using FT-IR spectroscopy and UV-visible spectrophotometry, respectively. The infrared investigation indicates that the role of frother molecules in creating bubble thin films is based on their ...

Adsorption of frothers at coal/water interfaces

Colloids and Surfaces, 1982
Abstract The adsorption of phenol and three commonly used frothers, namely, terpineol, methylisobutylcarbinol (MIBC) and cresol, on coal surfaces has been studied through UV spectrophotometric and gas chromatographic techniques. The rate of attaining adsorption equilibrium of these alcohols onto coal is very slow, possibly due to pore diffusion.

Particle size and frother effects in column flotation

Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration, 2003
Flotation experiments were carried out in a 76-mm- (3-in.-) diam, 3.55-m- (11.65-ft-) high column equipped with a Mott porous sparger. The variables studied included coal type, particle size, airflow rate and frother type. The column throughput was found to be a function of the airflow rate, frother type and feed size, and it was correlated to the ...
