Froude number paradoxes in modeling of snowdrift

Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 1990
Abstract It is well known that Froude scaling is not always suitable for the modeling of snow drifting. However, the reason of the unsuitability has not been revealed. This paper presents three paradoxes which prove unsuitability of the Froude number as the similitude parameter in the modeling of snowdrift.

Tsunami forcing by a low Froude number landslide

Environmental Fluid Mechanics, 2015
The waves generated by a submarine landslide, of great concern to coastal communities, exhibit strong dependence on the landslide motion along the sea floor. A series of two-dimensional physical experiments investigate the waves generated by a solid block landslide moving along a horizontal boundary, allowing measurement of both onshore- and offshore ...

Nonlinear Ship Waves at Low Froude Number

Journal of Ship Research, 1988
The wave pattern of a thick ship-like object with finite bow and stern angles 0 <β<π/2 is studied. The completely blunt form p = π/2 is excluded. It turns out that the wave pattern is strongly influenced by the nonlinear terms at the free surface. The wave pattern is determined by means of the ray method.

Roll Motion of Yachts At Zero Froude Number

The International Journal of Small Craft Technology, 2004
Yachts tend to roll uncomfortably whilst at anchor, causing discomfort to the crew and passengers, generating stresses on equipment, and making operations such as embarking and disembarking hazardous activities. A research program is under way to better understand the design factors and environmental influences leading to the rolling problem, with a ...

Effect of the Froude number on assessment of the bridge afflux

Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Water Management, 2008
This paper presents the findings of laboratory model testing of arch and straight-deck bridge constrictions, in a symmetrical compound channel flume having different roughness conditions. Four different types of bridge models, namely a single-opening, semicircular arch bridge, a multiple-opening, semicircular arch bridge, a single opening, elliptic ...

Two-dimensional planing at high Froude number

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1958
This paper examines the flow characteristics of a body of small slope planing at high Froude number over a water surface. An equation is obtained relating the slope of the planing surface to an integral containing the pressure distribution on the planing surface.

Froude Number Scaling of Wind-Stress Coefficients

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1969
Abstract Following the verification of the logarithmic nature of the wind profile and the establishment of a non-dimensional expression relating the shear velocity and surface roughness, a Froude number is proposed for scaling the wind stress at the air-water interface. A correlation curve for wind stresses determined at all fetches is presented and is

Stilling Basin Design for Low Froude Number

Journal of the Hydraulics Division, 1975
Laboratory tests were conducted to investigate the possibilities of increasing the energy loss and shortening the required stilling basin length for the Froude number range of 2.5 - 4.5. Data were collected for both the ordinary hydraulic jump and the forced hydraulic jump.
