Nonlinear Ship Waves at Low Froude Number

Journal of Ship Research, 1988
The wave pattern of a thick ship-like object with finite bow and stern angles 0 <β<π/2 is studied. The completely blunt form p = π/2 is excluded. It turns out that the wave pattern is strongly influenced by the nonlinear terms at the free surface. The wave pattern is determined by means of the ray method.

Froude-Zahl Fr (Froude number Fr)

2000

The Froude number stick, an evaluation

River Research and Applications, 2004
AbstractThis paper examines whether horizontal free surface flow patterns can reveal bulk river flow characteristics, such as the Froude number. To do this, the Froude number was measured between 0.2 and 1.2 by visually observing the flow patterns around a wooden stick, the so‐called ‘Froude stick’ described in the literature.

Three-Dimensional Planing at High Froude Number

Journal of Ship Research, 1971
The steady motion of a planing surface of moderate aspect ratio at small angles of attack is considered. Linearized theory is used with a square-root type of pressure singularity representing the flow near the leading edge. An asymptotic solution for the pressure distribution on the planing surface at large Froude number (or small β, the inverse of the

Froude number effects on flow over topography

Geophysical & Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics, 1987
Abstract The response or a depth independent two layer flow to an underlying topographic irregularity is studied for flows in which the square of the internal Froude number exceeds the Rossby number. Irrespective of the magnitude of the Rossby number, rotation is important for such flows.

Oblique liquid curtains with a large Froude number

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2018
This paper examines two-dimensional liquid curtains ejected at an angle to the horizontal and affected by gravity and surface tension. The flow in the curtain is, generally, sheared. The Froude number based on the injection velocity and the outlet’s width is assumed large; as a result, the streamwise scale of the curtain exceeds its thickness. A set of

Minimum Flow Estimated By the Froude Number

Impacts of Global Climate Change, 2005
Following the development and management of water resources to satisfy the human demand, the quantity and quality of flow in streams change in both space and time. With increasing recognition of streams being fundamental to human existence, concerns for the effect on the stream ecosystem have been raised by government, biologists and private citizen ...

Froude number paradoxes in modeling of snowdrift

Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 1990
Abstract It is well known that Froude scaling is not always suitable for the modeling of snow drifting. However, the reason of the unsuitability has not been revealed. This paper presents three paradoxes which prove unsuitability of the Froude number as the similitude parameter in the modeling of snowdrift.

Froude Number Scaling of Wind-Stress Coefficients

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1969
Abstract Following the verification of the logarithmic nature of the wind profile and the establishment of a non-dimensional expression relating the shear velocity and surface roughness, a Froude number is proposed for scaling the wind stress at the air-water interface. A correlation curve for wind stresses determined at all fetches is presented and is
