FRUIT CRACKING, ITS CAUSES AND MANAGEMENT

2023
Cracking is the term used to describe the phenomena of surface or tissue cracking at a variety of degrees depending on varietal susceptibilities, nutritional inadequacies, and environmental factors. Fruit cracking is one of the main quality issues, and research on the status of the nutrient calcium has shown that it plays a role in the physiological ...

Course of fruit cracking in ‘Whansan’ pears

Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology, 2020
This study was evaluated on time of occurrence and tissue characteristics in fruit cracking of mid-season cultivar Whansan Asian pears (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) with high amount of precipitation from 60 to 120 days after full bloom (DAFB). Fruit cracking was observed at different topographic ‘Whansan’ pear orchards as a pre-experiment.

Cuticular cracking in bell pepper fruit: II. Effects of fruit water relations and fruit expansion

The Journal of Horticultural Science and Biotechnology, 1999
SummaryThe objective of this research was to study the role of fruit expansion and turgor in the formation of cuticular cracking in bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.). Fruit was artificially cracked by filling detached hollowed pepper fruits with distilled water. However, when isotonic mannitol solution was used, cracking did not occur.

Fruit Cracking in Norwegian Grown Sweet Cherries

Acta Agriculturae Scandinavica, 1987
Abstract The susceptibility to cracking of 16 Norwegian grown sweet cherry cultivars was measured by means of the cracking index method. Very high cracking index scores were found for ‘Van', ‘Merton Glory', ‘Vega' and ‘Vista' while ‘Emperor Francis', ‘Schmidt’ and ‘Sam’ got medium high scores. Low scores were obtained for ‘Sue’, ‘Kristin’, ‘Ulster’ and

Physiological and genetic factors influencing fruit cracking

Acta Physiologiae Plantarum, 2014
One of the main disorders that widely limit fruit quality and quantity is fruit cracking or splitting that is observed on the fruit skin and flesh in the preharvest phase. Besides, cracking can occur during postharvest in some fruits, mostly attributable to the environmental conditions of storage. Value of cracked fruits is reduced and these fruits are

QTL detection for fruit weight, fruit firmness and fruit cracking tolerance in sweet cherry

2012
Rain-induced fruit cracking is one of the most limiting factors of cherry cultivation in many growing regions. Thus, breeders seek cracking-tolerant varieties. INRA has recently started a breeding program aimed at applying multi-trait marker-assisted strategies, which have to be preceded by the study of the genetic determinism of agronomic traits of ...
