Bee Visitation and Fruit Quality in Berries Under Protected Cropping Vary Along the Length of Polytunnels [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Economic Entomology, 2019
Abstract Wild and managed bees provide effective crop pollination services worldwide. Protected cropping conditions are thought to alter the ambient environmental conditions in which pollinators forage for flowers, yet few studies have compared conditions at the edges and center of growing tunnels. We measured environmental variables (

Impact of fruit flies (Diptera:Tephritidae) on Chayote (Sechium edule) in Reunion Island [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Background. Chayote is a popular vegetable in Reunion Island. Traditionally and extensively cultivated for its leaves, it is nowadays usually intensively cultivated under treillises for the production of fruit. A high number of fruit fallen on the ground

Membrane Wrapping for High Capacity and Rapidly Switchable Adhesives

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A membrane‐wrapping mechanism enables high‐capacity, rapidly switchable adhesion by coupling suction, friction, and adhesion. Broadband performance is achieved in dry and underwater conditions, allowing fast, reversible manipulation of objects of diverse sizes and shapes, from delicate eggs and berries to flat, complex, or heavy objects. These outcomes

Identification of microRNAs in normal and mantled oil palm fruit via 454 transcriptome sequencing (P053) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Small RNAs such as miRNAs and siRNAs play a critical role in post-transcriptional gene regulation and have been shown to control many genes involved in various biological processes including fruit development. Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq) belongs to

Genetic Analysis and QTL Mapping of Fruit Peduncle Length in Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.)

open access: yesPLOS ONE, 2016
Mechanized harvesting of cucumbers offers significant advantages compared to manual labor as both shortages and costs of labor increase. However the efficient use of machines depends on breeding plants with longer peduncles, but the genetic and molecular basis of fruit peduncle development in cucumber is not well understood.

Selective Separation of the Rare Earth Elements Dysprosium and Neodymium via Tailoring Nanocellulose Chemical Structure

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Dicarboxylate‐modified anionic hairy cellulose nanocrystals exhibit a high selectivity for dysprosium(III) over neodymium(III). This selectivity arises from disordered dicarboxylate cellulose “hairs” that enable cooperative ionic coordination, hydrogen bonding, and strain‐induced conformational shrinkage.
