The most relevant aspects related to flowering, fruit set, and fruit development are reviewed in this chapter. In relation to flowering, special attention has been paid to the genetic, environmental aspects, particularly temperature and water stress, and to the endogenous factors, such as the nutritional status of the plant and the influence of the ...

PHYSIOLOGICAL FACTORS IN TOMATO FRUIT‐SET
American Journal of Botany, 1952THE CHANGE-OVER from the static condition of the flower ovary to the rapidly growing condition of a young fruit is a dramatic shift. This important phenomenon, commonly spoken of as fruit-set, is an essential step in the life cycle of all sexually reproducing higher plants.

Fruit set, development and maturation.
2021Abstract This chapter describes the guava fruit as well as the fruit set, growth, drop, harvesting, yield and quality (total soluble solids, total acids and ascorbic acid). Understanding the phenological cycle of guava and the effect of management practices on yield and fruit quality allows management practices to be modified to develop ...

Unraveling the signal scenario of fruit set
Planta, 2014Long-term goals to impact or modify fruit quality and yield have been the target of researchers for many years. Different approaches such as traditional breeding, mutation breeding, and transgenic approaches have revealed a regulatory network where several hormones concur in a complex way to regulate fruit set and development, and these networks are ...

Flowering, Pollination, and Fruit Set in Fruit Crops
Focusing on reproductive biology, this chapter discusses the factors influencing flowering, pollination, and fruit set in fruit crops. It explains pollination types, pollinator management, and hormonal regulation of fruit set. The chapter also covers problems like flower and fruit drop and techniques to enhance fruit retention and productivity.Lall, Deepak +3 more

Fruit set, fruit reduction, and fruiting strategy in Cornus sanguinea (Cornaceae)
American Journal of Botany, 1996We studied various aspects of the fruiting biology of Cornus sanguinea (Cornaceae), a fleshy‐fruit‐producing deciduous shrub, in four populations in northwest Spain. One population was studied over a 5‐yr period (1989‐1994), and the remaining populations in 1994 only. Fruit‐set level varied among years (range 11‐18%) and among populations (range 8‐22%),

FRUIT SET AND FRUIT QUALITY AT DIFFERENT CROSSINGS BETWEEN SOUR CHERRY CULTIVARS
Acta Horticulturae, 2000By diallelic reciprocal crossings and open pollination of sour cherry cultivars 'Meteor', 'Oblacinska' and 'Heimanns Konserven', pollination effect (based on fruit set and fruit harvested) and fruit quality (based on fruit weight and stone weight) was established. In all crossings, on average, 'Meteor' as a female parent, had the highest fruit set, but

PATTERNS OF FRUIT-SET: WHAT CONTROLS FRUIT-FLOWER RATIOS IN PLANTS?
Evolution, 1986Fruit-set values for 447 species of plants were examined for variations due to compatibility, breeding system, life form, latitude, type of fruit, and type of pollination. The results indicate significant differences between self-compatible and self-incompatible species in terms of 1) average fruit-set and 2) the effect of the independent variables ...

Fruit Set and Temperature Stress
2014In fruit vegetables, inhibition of fruit set by both high and low temperatures decreases the yield. Because one of the main reasons for fruit abortion is a decrease in pollen viability, which is usually caused by suboptimal mean daily temperature, periodic checking of pollen viability may help to detect and prevent fruit abortion.

Fruit Set, Herbivory, Fruit Reduction, and the Fruiting Strategy of Catalpa Speciosa (Bignoniaceae)
Ecology, 1980Catalpa speciosa regularly initiates more fruits than it matures. Most of the fruits that fail to mature are abscised from 2—5 wk after the flowering period. Catalpa speciosa has a host—specific herbivore, Ceratomia cactic (Sphingidae), which severely defoliates some branches while causing little or no damage to leaves of other branches. The pattern of
