Variation of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus content in fungi reflects their ecology and phylogeny

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology
Fungi are an integral part of the nitrogen and phosphorus cycling in trophic networks, as they participate in biomass decomposition and facilitate plant nutrition through root symbioses.

1177. Streptocarpus aylae T.J.Edwards

open access: yesCurtis's Botanical Magazine, EarlyView.
Summary Streptocarpus aylae T.J.Edwards, a spectacular, rosette forming herbaceous perennial from cliffs of the Msikaba River in Pondoland, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa is illustrated and discussed. The species is known from only two sites and is highly localised, growing in humus rich cracks and crevices on sandstone cliffs.

Cadmium accumulation in organisms from a spruce plantation amended with wood ash - an environmental risk?

open access: yesTrees, Forests and People
Recycling of wood ash from power plants to forest plantations returns plant nutrients lost at harvest. However, wood ash contains a considerable amount of cadmium (Cd) that may accumulate in the forest food web, and eventually threaten environment and ...

Bacteria and archaea in fruiting bodies

open access: yes, 2013
Sienillä on keskeinen merkitys ekosysteemissämme ravinteiden kierrättäjinä ja sienijuurien muodostajina. Hajottaja- ja sienijuurisienistä suuri osa on kantasieniä.

Functional and transcriptomic analyses in Neurospora crassa reveal a crucial role for the N‐glycoprotein deglycosylation process in fungal homeostasis

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
In Neurospora crassa, a cytosolic GH18 endo‐β‐n‐acetylglucosaminidase (ENGase) functions as an active deglycosylating enzyme. Deletion of this severely alters tolerance to multiple stress conditions and causes extensive transcriptomic reprogramming, including upregulation of a GH20 exo‐β‐n‐acetylhexosaminidase under ER stress, indicating that N. crassa

Taxonomic and methodological biases in saproxylic beetles: Body size, trophic group and detection probability

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Smaller saproxylic beetle species are described later and appear later in georeferenced databases, demonstrating a persistent body‐size bias that contributes to Linnean and Wallacean shortfalls. Trophic group, not body size, is the primary driver of detection probability in standardised flight‐trap surveys, with sapro‐xylophagous species detected most ...

Understanding morphogenesis in myxobacteria from a theoretical and experimental perspective [PDF]

open access: yes
Several species of bacteria exhibit multicellular behaviour, with individuals cells cooperatively working together within a colony. Often this has communal benefit since multiple cells acting in unison can accomplish far more than an individual cell can ...

Assessment of Small‐Scale Laboratory Rearing Systems for Frankliniella occidentalis (Western Flower Thrips) Using a Single Female

open access: yesJournal of Applied Entomology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Reliable laboratory rearing of Frankliniella occidentalis is critical for experimental consistency in entomological research. This study validates and optimises three small‐scale rearing systems initiated from a single female thrips using various organic fruits, flowers and pollen as feed, along with moist cotton, blotting paper and ...

Erythrocyte ‘Feierzeit’ reaction: Novel filamentous and vesicular response to n‐butyl acetate

open access: yesJournal of Microscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract Human erythrocytes (red blood cells; RBCs) undergo spontaneous disassembly after several hours of exposure to n‐butyl acetate (nBA). Images of the morphological changes were captured in time‐lapse sequences using differential interference contrast (DIC) light microscopy.
