Structure and Development of Myriodesma (Fucales)

Botanical Gazette, 1962
1. Growth in Myriodesma results from the activity of a three-sided apical cell. Three tissues are formed: the meristoderm, cortex, and medulla. Surface growth results from the meristematic activity of the meristoderm cells. 2. The conceptacles are bisexual. Tufts of paraphyses occur at the center of the floor of the conceptacles. Each oogonium produces

Branching pattern and growth in Cystophora (Fucales, Phaeophyta)

Phycologia, 1987
Abstract Apical cells are lenticular in longitudinal section and triangular in transverse section, are larger than those surrounding them and have less dense contents compared with the surrounding cells. The apical cell usually divides longitudinally repeatedly and new cells resulting from these divisions continue to divide longitudinally and ...

Phenotypic variability in Sargassum polyceratium (Fucales, Phaeophyta)

Phycologia, 1989
Abstract Local-scale population differentiation of Sargassum polyceratium Montagne from the Content Keys, Florida, was evaluated. Forty-seven phenotypes were recognized based on blade features. The most common phenotype had lanceolate, often undulate, blades with serrated margins. Plants with flat or curly ovate blades or flat linear blades were common.

The chemistry of the cystoseiraceae (Fucales: Pheophyceae): Chemotaxonomic relationships

Biochemical Systematics and Ecology, 1995
This review presents the chemistry of secondary metabolites isolated from the Cystoseiraceae and its contribution to the identification of species belonging to the major genera of this family. It completes Piattelli's review on the chemistry and taxonomy of Sicilian Cystoseira species which was presented at the Sixth International Symposium on Marine ...

Polar acyclic diterpenoids from Bifurcaria bifurcata (Fucales, Phaeophyta)

Phytochemistry, 2005
From the lipophilic extract of the brown alga Bifurcaria bifurcata collected off the Atlantic coast of Southern Brittany (Quiberon, France), five polar linear diterpenoids have been isolated. These metabolites have been identified as hydroxylated derivatives of 13-oxo- and 13-hydroxygeranylgeraniol.

Inorganic carbon acquisition by Xiphophora chondrophylla (Phaeophyta, Fucales)

Phycologia, 1996
Abstract Measurements of parameters related to photosynthesis, with particular reference to the mechanism of inorganic C acquisition, were made on Xiphophora chondrophylla (R. Brown ex Turner) Montagne ex Harvey, an Australasian fucoid living in the upper subtidal and in low intertidal rock pools.

Typification of the Indo‐Pacific Sirophysalis trinodis (Fucales: Sargassaceae)

TAXON, 2015
AbstractThe typification of the Indo‐Pacific seaweed Sirophysalis trinodis (Phaeophyceae) is discussed. Original material conserved in the Herbarium Forsskålii at C is designated as the lectotype.

The environmental role of alginates in Durvillaea potatorum (Fucales, Phaeophyta)

Phycologia, 1985
Abstract The composition of alginates and their contribution to the dry weight of the lamina and stipe of Durvillaea potatorum have been examined. Assays of tissue samples were performed using the carbazole method and standards for these assays were prepared by partial acid hydrolysis of extracted alginates followed by differential precipitation of the

Paleo-phyllotaxis: Fucales, bryophytes, lycophytes and monilophytes

BioSystems
Fibonacci spiral arrangements have evolved independently in brown algae, bryophytes, in lycophytes and euphyllophytes. "Non-Fibonacci spirals" have been described in Asteroxylon mackiei from the Rhynie chert and on the rhyzomes of lycopsid fossils (stigmaria) as well as several groups of living lycophytes and euphyllophytes.
