Fuel Treatment Longevity in Ponderosa Pine-Dominated Forest 24 Years After Cutting and Prescribed Burning

open access: yesFrontiers in Forests and Global Change, 2020
Fuels reduction treatments to mitigate fire behavior are common in ponderosa pine ecosystems of the western United States. While initial impacts of fuel treatments have been reported, less is known about treatment longevity as live and dead fuels change ...

Retention in tungsten resulting from extremely high fluence plasma exposure

open access: yesNuclear Materials and Energy, 2016
PISCES-B was used for a series of high-fluence plasma exposures to investigate the deuterium fuel retention properties of tungsten, when exposed to continuous plasma irradiation.

Improved Genetic Algorithm for Solving Green Path Models of Concrete Trucks

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2023
In this paper, for the problem of high total fuel consumption of distribution trucks when multiple concrete-mixing plants distribute concrete together, we established a green fuel consumption model for distribution trucks and solved the model with an ...

WallDYN simulations of material migration and fuel retention in ITER low power H plasmas and high power neon-seeded DT plasmas

open access: yesNuclear Materials and Energy, 2019
Deposition and fuel retention profiles in low power hydrogen L-mode plasmas and neon (Ne) seeded ITER DT burning plasmas have been investigated. Two different Ne seeded plasma backgrounds with varying sub-divertor neutral pressures but the same Ne ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Overview of fuel retention and recovery in JET deuterium–tritium operation

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
Tritium inventory build-up is a safety and economic issue for next step fusion devices and power plants. JET with a beryllium wall and tungsten divertor brings a unique contribution on fuel retention and recovery in a metallic device, as it has operated ...

Invasion of a non‐native forb reduces flammability in a fire‐dependent ecosystem

open access: yesEcosphere, 2022
Fire and grazing are two of the most common global disturbances that maintain and promote many grassland ecosystems worldwide. The presence of non‐native, invasive plant species can alter fire regimes through changes in fuel properties that affect native

An unexpected alternative viologen electron mediator site in tungsten‐containing formate dehydrogenase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
An unexpected alternative interaction site for ethyl viologen was identified in formate dehydrogenase 1 from Methylorubrum extorquens. Combined mutagenesis, kinetic analysis, and docking revealed that aromatic residues near an iron–sulfur cluster enable flavin mononucleotide‐independent electron transfer, offering a framework for engineering improved ...
