Estimation Method for TBM Cutterhead Drive Design Based on Full-Scale Tunneling Tests for Application in Utility Tunnels

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2020
The utility tunnels used for electricity transmission are in high demand these days. The literature presents many limitations in the currently used cutterhead drive design procedure while using a shield tunnel boring machine (TBM) for the excavation of ...

Loading Tests on Full-Scale House Roofs

open access: yes, 1962
Earlier loading tests on single roof frames had shown that many conven tional rafter-and-joist frames had failure loads well below the design snow loads specified in Canada. This suggested that either actual snow loads were lower than the design values or that the strength of individual roof frames do not indicate full strength of the complete roof ...

Influence and evaluation of constraint on fracture toughness in pipeline research [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Accessing nowadays fossil fuel reserves requires a strain-based design approach. Within such design, the ductile tearing resistance is a key parameter in assessing the defect tolerance. To determine this tearing resistance, full scale (pressurized) tests

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

A Framework for Predicting Fatigue Crack Initiation Life in Pipelines with Girth Welds

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
Current studies on fatigue crack initiation in pipelines remain relatively limited. Existing frameworks are confronted with issues including difficulties in crack monitoring and limited consideration of intragranular short-crack propagation.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Flexural Performance of Steel–Normal Concrete–Ultra-High-Performance Concrete Composite Slabs with Steel Ribs

open access: yesBuildings
For steel–concrete composite bridges, the cracking of concrete in the tensile zone influences the serviceability of bridges and decreases their durability.
