The quasi-geostrophic ellipsoidal vortex model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We present a simple approximate model for studying general aspects of vortex interactions in a rotating stably-stratified fluid. The model idealizes vortices by ellipsoidal volumes of uniform potential vorticity, a materially conserved quantity in an ...

Determining source parameters from waveforms of small earthquakes in the Carpathian region of Ukraine

open access: yesГеофизический журнал, 2018
In the paper, a method is presented for moment tensor inversion of only direct P- and/or S-waves registered at only one station. Lesser sensitivity of direct waves, if compared to reflected and converted waves, to path effects modeling significantly ...

Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

Assessment of the life cycle of masonry walls in residential buildings

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2018
Environmental assessment over the course of the full life cycle of a building (LCA - Life Cycle Assessment) covers the environmental burden connected with energy consumption and the accompanying emission of contaminants into the atmosphere from the ...

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

MATHICSE Technical Report : Moment equations for the mixed formulation of the Hodge Laplacian with stochastic data [PDF]

open access: yes
We study the mixed formulation of the stochastic Hodge-Laplace problem defined on a n-dimensional domain D ($n \geq 1$), with random forcing term. In particular, we focus on the magnetostatic problem and on the Darcy problem in the three dimensional case.

The crystal structure of the Borrelia burgdorferi nicotinamidase BBE22 resolves a long‐standing annotation error

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The crystal structure of Borrelia burgdorferi nicotinamidase (PncA/BBE22) reveals the correct full‐length protein initiated from a non‐canonical AUU start codon. The structure validates previous biochemical findings and resolves a long‐standing annotation error, demonstrating that the truncated database sequence is structurally incompatible with the ...

How phagocytic cells kill bacteria: Lessons from a professional killer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
How phagocytic cells ingest and kill bacteria has been studied for more than a century, but many questions remain unanswered. The study of the amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum brings new answers, and new questions. Professional phagocytic cells such as neutrophils and macrophages, as well as free‐living soil amoebae like Dictyostelium discoideum, employ

Circuit theory of charge transport in mesoscopic conductors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
This Thesis is devoted to the circuit theory of mesoscopic transport. The emphasis is put on its extension which provides a method to obtain the complete statistics of the transferred charge. To accomplish this task, several topics have to be combined: a
