Evaluating the partition function for systems with long range interactions

open access: yes, 1999
We express the partition function for an equilibrium system of interacting particles in the canonical ensemble as a functional integration over the particles' density field.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Patterns of Avian Frugivory in Beijing's Urban Forest Across Multiple Temporal Scales

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Avian frugivory is a vital process shaping the diversity of bird and plant species. Nevertheless, how this process varies temporally in urban forests is not well understood.

On L-functions of cyclotomic function fields

open access: yesJournal of Number Theory, 2006
We study two criterions of cyclicity for divisor class groups of functions fields, the first one involves Artin L-functions and the second one involves "affine" class groups. We show that, in general, these two criterions are not linked.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

The Bifixation Field as a Function of Viewing Distance

open access: yesJournal of Ophthalmology, 2014
Hering reported that the area over which he could bifixate a target was smaller at near convergence distances than far convergence distances and predicted that in extreme horizontal gaze positions, the temporally directed eye lags behind the nasally ...

Field emission characteristics of a nanotube-fullerene composite: a theoretical study

open access: yesMaterials Research Express, 2021
First-principles calculations are used to investigate electronic and field emission characteristics of a nanotube-fullerene composite (a single-walled carbon nanotube (CNT) with a C _20 molecule), which indicate that emission currents of the CNT ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Effects of whole‐soil warming on ecosystem carbon fluxes in an alpine grassland

open access: yesGrassland Research
Background Global warming impacts ecosystem carbon exchange, thus altering the carbon sink capacity of terrestrial ecosystems. However, the response of ecosystem carbon fluxes to whole‐soil‐profile warming remains unclear.
