Normative Values of Physical Fitness Test in the Elderly: A Community Based Study in an Urban Population in Northeast India [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research, 2017
Introduction: Physical inactivity exposes elderly people to higher risk of diseases. Assessing their functional fitness using fitness assessment tools like Senior Fitness Test (SFT) is helpful in geriatric care.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Validity of the Quadratic Fitness Function [PDF]

open access: yesNature New Biology, 1973
O'DONALD1 has suggested that if the probability of an animal surviving natural selection is related to some quantitative character X, then a quadratic relationship will often be reasonable and the fitness of an individual with X = x can be assumed to be given by the fitness function. illustration where θ is the optimum value for x. He showed1–3 that if

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Cortical interneurons: fit for function and fit to function? Evidence from development and evolution

open access: yesFrontiers in Neural Circuits, 2023
Cortical inhibitory interneurons form a broad spectrum of subtypes. This diversity suggests a division of labor, in which each cell type supports a distinct function. In the present era of optimisation-based algorithms, it is tempting to speculate that these functions were the evolutionary or developmental driving force for the ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Fitness functions for RNA structure design

open access: yesNucleic Acids Research, 2022
Abstract An RNA design algorithm takes a target RNA structure and finds a sequence that folds into that structure. This is fundamentally important for engineering therapeutics using RNA. Computational RNA design algorithms are guided by fitness functions, but not much research has been done on the merits of these functions.

Measuring the Impact of COVID-19 on Young Adult Functional Capacity: A Comparative Study of Walking and Step Endurance Tests

open access: yesPhysical Education Theory and Methodology
Objectives. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the functional capacity of young adults recovering from COVID-19 using the 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) and 2-Minute Step Test (2MST), focusing on cardiovascular parameters, and to examine correlations ...
