Disturbance decoupled functional observers
IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, 1999Summary: If a state observer does not exist, it is possible to design a functional observer. Principally, this is also true for systems with unknown inputs (termed as disturbances). Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of disturbance decoupled functional observers for linear time-invariant systems are provided.

Functional Detectability and Asymptotic Functional Observer Design
IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, 2023The objective of this paper is to present a new solution to the functional observer design problem. First, a new definition for functional detectability is given, then some algebraic conditions for linear multivariable systems to be functional detectable are presented.

A procedure for designing linear functional observers [PDF]
We present low-order functional observer existence conditions; the proposed existence conditions always lead to a design of functional observers of order less than or equal to that of a Luenberger observer.

On the Functional Observer Design With Sampled Measurement
IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, 2023In this paper, a functional observer for continuous systems with sampled measurement is designed for a class of nonlinear systems, operating under unknown inputs, and the existence conditions are derived. The nonlinear function, as a function of full states, is decomposed to Lipschitz term and an unknown one.

Nonlinear observer design techniques with observability functions
52nd IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, 2013Two different observer design techniques for linear and nonlinear systems based on the so-called observability function, which is related to the Gramian matrix in the linear case, are proposed. Asymptotic and finite-time convergence results are provided. The effectiveness of the proposed approaches are demonstrated via numerical simulations.

On functional observability and functional observer design
AutomaticaThis manuscript deals with the problem of observer design, to estimate all the states of a system. Let us consider the following multivariable system, \begin{align*} \dot{x}(t) & = A x(t)+B u(t),\\ y(t) & = C x(t),\\ z(t) & = L x(t), \end{align*} with the initial state \(x(0)=x_0\), \(x(t) \in \mathbb{R}^n\) is the state vector, \(u(t) \in \mathbb{R}^m\

Generality of functional observer structures
IEEE Conference on Decision and Control and European Control Conference, 2011Functional observers estimate a linear function of the state vector directly without having to estimate all the individual states. In the past various observer structures have been employed to design such functional estimates. In this paper we discuss the generality of those various observer structures and prove the conditions under which those ...

Observations on the Functions of the Brain
The New England Journal of Medicine, Surgery and Collateral Branches of ScienceAbstract The observations comprised in this paper, are selected from those cases of injury to the brain which have occurred to the author in the course of his professional pursuits. The facts thus accidentally forced upon his notice, may be regarded as so many experiments made on different portions of the living brain; and the remarks

Modified parameterization of functional observers
Proceedings of the 2000 American Control Conference. ACC (IEEE Cat. No.00CH36334), 2000A modified parameterization of functional observers is characterized. A free parameter in observers is restricted within the ring of strictly proper stable rational matrices. The order of observers is lower than the previous ones by the number of output.

Observing a function of the state
1973 IEEE Conference on Decision and Control including the 12th Symposium on Adaptive Processes, 1973This paper discusses a well known change of co-ordinates for multiple output systems from a different viewpoint, and a new, simplified, low order observer design. The discussion of the transformation given here exhibits more of the system structure than previous presentations.
