Busemann Functions and Barrier Functions [PDF]

open access: yesActa Applicandae Mathematicae, 2017
We show that Busemann functions on a smooth, non-compact, complete, boundaryless, connected Riemannian manifold are viscosity solutions with respect to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation determined by the Riemannian metric and consequently they are locally semi-concave with linear modulus.

Metalinguistic Awareness in the EFL Classroom and Beyond: Exploring the Potential of Translation Tasks

open access: yesTESOL Quarterly, EarlyView.
Abstract Current trends encouraging a move away from monolingual teaching have sparked a renewed interest in the role of translation in language instruction. Yet, there are few theoretically and empirically grounded proposals regarding specific uses of translation in the language classroom.

Challenging the ‘S’ of Mayoral Strategic Authorities: Standardisation over Strategy?

Buddhist Society of Wonderful Enlightenment Terrace: Observations on Functionalism

open access: yes, 2013
Louis Sullivan’s “form ever follows function” had a profound influence on architecture. Although often confused as synonymous with modernism, functionalism is more closely related to positivism in its bias toward science and its rejection of ...

Functional Dependence and Analytic Functions [PDF]

open access: yesCanadian Mathematical Bulletin, 1979
AbstractWithout appealing to the Cauchy theorem or its corollaries, it is proved that the real and imaginary parts of a non-constant complex-valued analytic function of several complex variables are functionally independent. This unifies and generalizes some results sporadically treated in standard treatises on function theory.

Crisis, temporality and governmental policy agendas: The cases of Finland and Sweden

open access: yesScandinavian Political Studies, EarlyView.
Abstract Crises transform the temporal orientation of political decision‐making. They demand immediate and decisive action and thus convert time into a means of political control. In these circumstances, assessing the long‐term consequences of proposed policies with respect to welfare, sustainability or justice also becomes demanding.

The Mind as Neural Software? Understanding Functionalism, Computationalism, and Computational Functionalism

open access: yes, 2009
Defending or attacking either functionalism or computationalism requires clarity on what they amount to and what evidence counts for or against them. My goal here is not to evaluate their plausibility.

Animal translations: AI and the intelligibility of non‐human worlds Traduire l'animal : l'IA et l'intelligibilité des mondes non humains

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, EarlyView.
Amid the general sense of worry that large language models will soon drown out human voices, some researchers are optimistic that machine learning will allow humans to listen to and understand animal voices to an unprecedented extent. As part of a broader project aimed at interspecies communication, a loosely connected set of animal behaviourists, AI ...

Some Remarks on Bonjour on Warrant, Proper Function, and Defeasibility

open access: yesPrincipia: An International Journal of Epistemology, 2000
A number of counterexamples have recently been leveled against Alvin Plantinga's Proper Functionalism, counterexamples aimed at showing that Plantinga's theory fads to provide sufficient conditions for warrant — that elusive epistemic property which ...

Function and Form: Shifts in Modernist Architects’ Design Thinking

open access: yesArts, 2017
Since the so-called “type-debate” at the 1914 Werkbund Exhibition in Cologne—on individual versus standardized types—the discussion about turning Function into Form has been an important topic in Architectural Theory.
