A cellular system to study responses to a collision between the transcription complex and a protein‐bound nick in the DNA template

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present the cellular transcription‐coupled Flp‐nick system allowing the introduction of a Top1‐mimicking cleavage complex (Flpcc) at a Flp recognition target site within a controllable LacZ gene. LacZ transcription leads to the collision of RNA polymerase II (RNAPII) with Flpcc, and this causes RNAPII stalling, ubiquitination, and degradation.

Valuing knowledge transfer : a new approach to assessing the broader impact of higher education institutions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
There is considerable policy interest in exploring the overall value of higher education to society and in how higher education can support wider economic growth and development through 'knowledge transfer' from higher education institutions.

Interaction vesicles as emerging mediators of host‐pathogen molecular crosstalk and their implications for infection dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Interaction extracellular vesicles (iEVs) are hybrid vesicles formed through host‐pathogen communication. They facilitate immune evasion, transfer pathogens' molecules, increase host cell uptake, and enhance virulence. This Perspective article illustrates the multifunctional roles of iEVs and highlights their emerging relevance in infection dynamics ...

Net Stable Funding Ratio: Impact on Funding Value Adjustment [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
In this paper we investigate the relationship between Funding Value Adjustment (FVA) and Net Stable Funding Ratio (NSFR). FVA is defined in a consistent way with NSFR such that the new framework of FVA monitors the costs due to keeping NSFR at an acceptable level, as well.

Pension Funding and the Economy: Would Proper Funding Cost Jobs? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
There is an ongoing debate in policy circles about the appropriate accounting standards for public sector pension funds. There are major differences between the standard practice of most pension funds and the policies that are advocated by many academic ...

STAT3 expression is reduced in cardiac pericytes in HFpEF and its loss reduces cellular adhesion and induces pericyte senescence

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) accounts for half of the heart failure cases. It is characterised by microvascular dysfunction, associated with reduced pericyte coverage and diminished STAT3 expression in pericytes. Loss of STAT3 impairs pericyte adhesion, promotes senescence, and activates a pro‐fibrotic gene program.

Fund Characteristics and Performances of Socially Responsible Mutual Funds: Do ESG Ratings Play a Role? [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
This paper examines the risk-adjusted performance and differential fund flows for socially responsible mutual funds (SRMF). The results show that SRMF rated high on ESG, perform better than lower rated ESG funds during the period of economic crisis. The findings also show that low ESG rated SRMF had higher differential cash-flows than high rated ESG ...

Crowdfunding scientific research: Descriptive insights and correlates of funding success

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
Crowdfunding has gained traction as a mechanism to raise resources for entrepreneurial and artistic projects, yet there is little systematic evidence on the potential of crowdfunding for scientific research.

The diversification benefits of hedge funds and funds of hedge funds [PDF]

open access: yesDerivatives Use, Trading & Regulation, 2007
We examine whether investors can improve their investment opportunity set through the addition of a hedge fund (HF) or fund of HF portfolio to different sets of benchmark portfolios. Using data from 1994 to 2004, we find that HF, as an asset class, improve the mean–variance frontier of sets of benchmark portfolios sorted by firm size and book-to-market
