Trimorphic stepping stones pave the way to fungal virulence [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2009
The fungal kingdom encompasses ≈1.5 million species (1) as diverse as single-celled yeasts, pathogens of animals/plants, and plant root symbionts. Fungi are eukaryotic, closely aligned with metazoans (2, 3). Animals and fungi diverged ≈1 billion years ago; their last common ancestor was unicellular, motile, and aquatic.

Principles for Rigorous Design and Application of Synthetic Microbial Communities

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
SynComs are artificially designed to enable inter‐species metabolic interactions, metabolic division of labor, and ecological interactions that can elicit phenotypes like colonization stability and environmental adaptation. This systematic review explores the processes used to construct SynComs, the assessment of the mechanisms of metabolic interaction

Surface architecture of Histoplasma capsulatum

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2011
The dimorphic fungal pathogen Histoplasma capsulatum is the most frequent cause of clinically significant fungal pneumonia in humans. H. capsulatum virulence is achieved, in part, through diverse and dynamic alterations to the fungal cell surface ...

Nitrogen regulation of virulence in clinically prevalent fungal pathogens [PDF]

open access: yesFEMS Microbiology Letters, 2013
The habitats of fungal pathogens range from environmental to commensal, and the nutrient content of these different niches varies considerably. Upon infection of humans, nutrient availability changes significantly depending on the site and pathophysiology of infection.

AIEgen‐Based Proactive Early Warning System and Precise Treatment Strategy for Monkeypox Prevention and Control

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
An intelligent early warning and treatment system for monkeypox, utilizing a sprayable AIEgen‐ liquid dressing (AIE@LD) that responds to lesion pH. Integrated with a smartphone app and cloud platform, it enables real‐time infection detection via fluorescence imaging and triggers on‐demand photodynamic therapy under white light, effectively eradicating ...

Traversing the Cell Wall: The Chitinolytic Activity of Histoplasma capsulatum Extracellular Vesicles Facilitates Their Release

open access: yesJournal of Fungi, 2023
Histoplasma capsulatum is the causative agent of histoplasmosis. Treating this fungal infection conventionally has significant limitations, prompting the search for alternative therapies. In this context, fungal extracellular vesicles (EVs) hold relevant

The plant-pathogen haustorial interface at a glance [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Many filamentous pathogens invade plant cells through specialized hyphae called haustoria. These infection structures are enveloped by a newly synthesized plant-derived membrane called the extrahaustorial membrane (EHM).

Processing of Candida albicans Ece1p Is Critical for Candidalysin Maturation and Fungal Virulence

open access: yesmBio, 2018
Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungal pathogen responsible for superficial and life-threatening infections in humans. During mucosal infection, C. albicans undergoes a morphological transition from yeast to invasive filamentous hyphae that secrete ...

Synthetic Lethal Therapy Based on Dimorphism for Systemic Infection of Drug‐Resistant Candida albicans

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
To tackle the alarming mortality rate linked to Candida albicans infections, a synthetic lethal strategy precisely aimed at the two distinct forms of this fungus: yeast and hyphae is formulated. Ultimately, through the innovative use of macrophage membranes for drug delivery, the effectiveness of this strategy is substantially boosted while ...
