Screening of Fungi for the Application of Self-Healing Concrete [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
Concrete is susceptible to cracking owing to drying shrinkage, freeze-thaw cycles, delayed ettringite formation, reinforcement corrosion, creep and fatigue, etc. Since maintenance and inspection of concrete infrastructure require onerous labor and high costs, self-healing of harmful cracks without human interference or intervention could be of great ...

Triarylphosphonium BODIPY‐Based [2]Rotaxanes Nanoparticles for Light‐Driven Antibacterial Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
New photosensitizers for light‐induced antimicrobial therapy are successfully synthesized and characterized. When dissolved in water, all compounds self‐assemble forming spherical aggregates with <100 nm dimensions. The nanoparticles show high photothermal conversion efficiency and demonstrate antimicrobial activity toward both Gram‐negative and Gram ...

Fungi and Effect of Fungi on Bodies

open access: yesAmerican International Journal of Cancer Studies, 2019
The  world   and  Kingdom Fungi involves   many  of the most important organisms, both in terms of their ecological and economic roles. By breaking down dead organic material, they continue the cycle of nutrients through ecosystems. In addition, most vascular plants could not grow without the symbiotic fungi, or mycorrhizae, that  increase their roots ...

Actinorhodin Biosynthesis Terminates with an Unprecedented Biaryl Coupling Reaction

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, Volume 135, Issue 5, January 26, 2023., 2023
The last dimerization step of actinorhodin (ACT) biosynthesis was established through biochemical studies. ActVA‐ORF4 is a unique NAD(P)H‐dependent enzyme that catalyzes the biaryl‐coupling reaction using 8‐hydroxydihydrokalafungin (DHK‐OH) as the sole substrate. ActVA‐ORF3 is a quinone‐forming enzyme that forms DHK‐OH and ACT.

Genome-scale phylogenetic analysis finds extensive gene transfer among Fungi [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2015
Although the role of lateral gene transfer is well recognized in the evolution of bacteria, it is generally assumed that it has had less influence among eukaryotes. To explore this hypothesis we compare the dynamics of genome evolution in two groups of organisms: Cyanobacteria and Fungi.

Interactions of Fungi with Concrete: Significant Importance for Bio-Based Self-Healing Concrete [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
The goal of this study is to explore a new self-healing concept in which fungi are used as a self-healing agent to promote calcium mineral precipitation to fill the cracks in concrete. An initial screening of different species of fungi has been conducted. Fungal growth medium was overlaid onto cured concrete plate.
