Preventative insecticides reduce seedling injury, but do not increase yield in Bt and non‐Bt corn grown in the mid‐Atlantic

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) traits, neonicotinoid seed treatments (NSTs), and in‐furrow pyrethroids (IFPs) can control insect pests of corn, but their target spectrum may be redundant and/or mismatch Mid‐Atlantic pest pressure. Across 9 site‐years insecticide treatments reduced pest damage and sometimes increased plant stand, but never improved yield ...

Plant protection treatments in Switzerland using unmanned aerial vehicles: regulatory framework and lessons learned

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly used for plant protection treatments. We describe the corresponding Swiss regulatory framework. We also summarize practical experiences gained from technical assessments performed within this framework, field use patterns and the results of field efficacy trials.

Aminoisothiazolamides, a new class of potent inhibitors of lysyl‐tRNA synthetase

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
The present work covers a series of novel herbicidal lead structures that possess an aminoisothiazolamide scaffold as a structural key feature. Lysyl‐tRNA synthetase 1 (KRS1) was identified as the biochemical mode‐of‐action. Based on optimized and tailored synthetic approaches, a broader SAR study was carried out delivering some lead structures that ...

Ecofriendly control of Drosophila suzukii via the photoinsecticide chlorophyllin

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Drosophila suzukii can be killed by feeding with sodium‐magnesium‐chlorophyllin and photoactivation with sunlight or LEDs. Chlorophyllin supplementation does not result in food aversion. The moribundity increases with the light‐ and chlorophyllin dose as well as time.

Indirect plant defense may provide economically important pest suppression in sorghum

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Laboratory measures of sorghum direct and indirect plant resistance traits aligned with natural enemy recruitment and pest suppression in the field. Abstract BACKGROUND A promising strategy to optimize biological control of insect pests is selecting crop varieties with indirect defense traits.

Intercropping mitigates incidence of the oilseed rape insect pest complex

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Intercropping reduces the incidence of the oilseed rape insect pest complex with a significant impact of the direct visual and physical disruption provided by the companion plant. Abstract BACKGROUND Oilseed rape (OSR, Brassica napus) is a major crop requiring numerous phytosanitary treatments.

A Smart Camera With Integrated Deep Learning Processing for Disease Detection in Open Field Crops of Grape, Apple, and Carrot

open access: yesJournal of Field Robotics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Downy mildew (Plasmopara), apple scab (Venturia inaequalis), and Alternaria leaf blight are endemic diseases that affect crops worldwide. The diseases can cause severe losses in grapes, apples and carrots when not detected and treated in an early stage.

HDL Nanodiscs Loaded with Liver X Receptor Agonist Decreases Tumor Burden and Mediates Long‐term Survival in Mouse Glioma Model

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
Synthetic high‐density lipoprotein (sHDL) nanodiscs are developed to co‐deliver liver‐X‐Receptor (LXR) agonists and Toll‐like receptor 9 (TLR‐9) agonist CpG for glioma treatment. By upregulation of ATP‐binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1), LXR agonists synergize with sHDL nanodiscs to deplete cholesterol and induce apoptosis of glioma cells.
