Bioprocesses have been operated according to the judgment of experts who are skilled operators and have long experience. In almost all cases, these experiences are described by linguistic IF-THEN rules. Fuzzy inference is one of the powerful tools to incorporate linguistic rules into computational algorithms for application to process control.

Mamdani-type fuzzy controllers are universal fuzzy controllers
Fuzzy Sets and Systems, 2001The authors address a problem about universal fuzzy controllers along with a proof that Mamdani-type fuzzy controllers are universal fuzzy controllers. The system under control is described by a state-space model of the form \(dx/dt=f(x(t),u(t))\) with a general form of the state feedback law \(u(t)=g(x(t))\), ``\(f\)'' and ``\(g\)'' being functions ...

In this article we analyze the process of executing the knowledge base (KB) of a fuzzy control system following the “Sup- * ” compositional rule of inference [Zadeh LA (1973): “Outline of a new approach to the analysis of complex systems and decision processes.” IEEE Trans. Syst.

Logic synthesis and hardware implementation of fuzzy controllers are introduced in this paper. The logic synthesis reduces the fuzzy controller to a set of Boolean equations. A software is specially developed for this purpose. The hardware implementation is carried out using field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). A speed of over 50 M FLIPS is achieved.

A methodology for the reduction of complexity of the fuzzy if-then rules for a robust controller system is presented. An analysis of the fuzzy if-then rules is performed by viewing the fuzzy sets in the rules as crisp sets. The knowledge of the analysis is used to reduce the number of variables and the number of fuzzy if-then rules.

Hierarchical Fuzzy Controllers
IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 1995Abstract The paper presents Fuzzy Logic Controllers (FLC) with hierarchically structured rule base as nonlinear blocks used in a control system for direct control or supervision of standard controllers. Unified approach based on Fuzzy Logic Neural Networks (FLNN) is used to reveal the essential functions of a FLC.

Fuzzy logic in control systems: fuzzy logic controller. I
IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, 1990For pt.I see ibid., vol.20, no.2, p.404-18, 1990. The basic aspects of the FLC (fuzzy logic controller) decision-making logic are examined. Several issues, including the definitions of a fuzzy implication, compositional operators, the interpretations of the sentence connectives 'and' and 'also', and fuzzy inference mechanisms, are investigated ...

Abstract A fuzzy program is defined as an ordered sequence of fuzzy instructions. In the execution of a fuzzy program, fuzzy instructions are translated into machine instructions by the use of MAX-METHOD and backtracking. To show how a fuzzy program is executed, a simulation system is exploited which controls a simple inchworm robot.
