A Simple UV-Completion of QED in 5D

open access: yes, 2010
We construct a Lifshitz-like version of five-dimensional (5D) QED which is UV - completed and reduces at low energies to ordinary 5D QED. The UV quantum behaviour of this theory is very smooth.

Photoreceptor degeneration has heterogeneous effects on functional retinal ganglion cell types

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, Volume 603, Issue 21, Page 6599-6621, November 1, 2025.
Abstract figure legend Photoreceptor loss has heterogeneous effects on functional retinal ganglion cell (RGC) types. A, illustrations of cross‐sections of rd10 retinae at different time points during degeneration. Left: P30, rod degeneration has commenced, cones are still unaffected.

What is next for LLMs? Pushing the boundaries of next‐gen AI computing hardware with photonic chips

open access: yesNanophotonics, Volume 14, Issue 22, Page 3499-3525, 01 November 2025.
Abstract Large language models (LLMs) are rapidly pushing the limits of contemporary computing hardware. For example, training GPT‐3 has been estimated to consume around 1,300 MWh of electricity, and projections suggest future models may require city‐scale (gigawatt) power budgets.

Estimating Short-term Default Probabilities Conditional to Economic Conditions: Applications of Regularisation Approach and Economic Adjustment Coefficients

open access: yesBusiness Systems Research
Corporate bonds are crucial for corporations as they provide a flexible and often less costly alternative to equity financing. However, rising corporate debt levels, along with rating downgrades and economic uncertainty, can cause corporations to face ...

Final report of grit blasting and metal spraying trials carried out at H. M. Dockyard, Devonport [PDF]

open access: yes, 1966
Mild steel surfaces that are to be protected by aluminium or zinc spray coatings are generally prepared by blasting with chilled iron angular grit. Previous work1had shown that a relationship exists between the grit blasting conditions (at least in ...

Identifying Common Disease Trajectories of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy with Electronic Health Records

open access: yesMovement Disorders Clinical Practice, Volume 12, Issue 10, Page 1528-1538, October 2025.
Abstract Background Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a rare neurodegenerative disorder characterized by parkinsonism and impairments in balance, language, and cognition. As an atypical parkinsonism, PSP progresses rapidly, lacks effective treatments, and poses significant caregiving burdens. While prior studies have identified risk factors, they

High Energy Field Theory in Truncated AdS Backgrounds

open access: yes, 2002
In this letter we show that, in five-dimensional anti-deSitter space (AdS) truncated by boundary branes, effective field theory techniques are reliable at high energy (much higher than the scale suggested by the Kaluza-Klein mass gap), provided one ...

Carta Editorial G24

open access: yesGremium

Unconventional Superconductivity and Density Waves in Twisted Bilayer Graphene

open access: yes, 2018
We study electronic ordering instabilities of twisted bilayer graphene with $n=2$ electrons per supercell, where correlated insulator state and superconductivity are recently observed.
