Serum Myonectin Levels Are Positively Associated With Physical Function and Lower Frailty‐Related Limitation in Maintenance Hemodialysis Patients: A Cross‐Sectional Study

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients frequently suffer from frailty, characterized by reduced physical function and poor prognosis. Myokines, such as myonectin, secreted by muscle, are emerging regulators of systemic health. This study investigated the relationship between serum myonectin, adipokines (adiponectin, omentin), and ...

Human gait recognition with matrix representation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Human gait is an important biometric feature. It can be perceived from a great distance and has recently attracted greater attention in video-surveillance-related applications, such as closed-circuit television.

Gender Differences in Dual Task Gait Performance in Older Adults

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Men's Health, 2011
Although attention-dividing dual tasks hinder gait performance in older persons, gender differences in gait have not been examined. The purpose of this study was to examine whether gait performance differs between older men and women during dual task ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Past Gait Speed as an Independent Predictor of Mortality in Older Adults Beyond Current Gait Speed [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Abstract Background We investigated whether past values of gait speed in older adults provide additional prognostic information beyond current gait speed alone. We assessed various models to best describe past and current value for prediction.

Winning the race with aging: age-related changes in gait speed and its association with cognitive performance in dogs

open access: yesFrontiers in Veterinary Science, 2023
IntroductionIn humans, gait speed is a crucial component in geriatric evaluation since decreasing speed can be a harbinger of cognitive decline and dementia.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Balance and gait adaptations in patients with early knee osteoarthritis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Gait adaptations in people with severe knee osteoarthritis (OA) have been well documented, with increased knee adduction moments (KAM) the most commonly reported parameter.

Neuromechanical gait signatures reveal holistic biomechanical responses to walking speed modulation in stroke survivors

open access: yesScientific Reports
During gait rehabilitation, determining the walking speed that optimizes an individual’s biomechanical gait quality is challenging because discrete biomechanical variables used to quantify gait quality change differentially with speed.

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...
