Recognition of galactan components of pectin by galectin‐3
The FASEB Journal, 2008It has been reported that modified forms of pectin possess anticancer activity. To account for this bioactivity, it has been proposed that fragments of pectin molecules can act by binding to and inhibiting the various roles of the mammalian protein galectin 3 (Gal3) in cancer progression and metastasis. Despite this clear molecular

Calorimetric study of galactans
Food Hydrocolloids, 1987Abstract The hehx-coil transitions of iota-carrageenan and agarose have been studied using microcalorimetry and polarimetry. On the basis of Manning's polyelectrolyte theory it is possible to propose a helical, dimer-coil transition for iota-carrageenan using the experimental results. For agarose, the enthalpy recorded during the transition is due to

Mechanism of galactan gelation
Food Hydrocolloids, 1992Abstract Results of the investigations on galactan gelation carried out in the Institute of Organoelement Compounds are reviewed. It is shown that a helical conformation of kappa-carrageenan and agarose is not a prerequisite for gelation of solutions of these galactans. Gelation of agarose is completely governed by hydrogen bonding.

The galactan-degrading enzymes in the snail Biomphalaria glabrata
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part B: Comparative Biochemistry, 19911. Embryonic snails incorporate from the perivitelline fluid in which they are embedded a polysaccharide, called galactan, which is composed entirely of D-, or D- and L-galactose. In this investigation the p-nitrophenyl-beta-D-galactoside degrading enzyme of Biomphalaria glabrata which was assumed to be involved in the degradation of the galactans was ...

Vibrational spectroscopy of seaweed galactans
Hydrobiologia, 1996Information from classical infrared spectroscopy studies has been of significance for characterizing seaweed galactans. The development of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and of Fourier transform laser Raman spectroscopy has produced great advances in the application of vibrational spectroscopy to the structural study of polysaccharides ...

Carbohydrate Polymers, 2018
Galactans exhibit many biological activities, including modulation of human gut microbiota. By optimizing hydrolysis conditions and fractionation protocols, we purified a series of galacto-oligosaccharides from potato galactan, with degrees of polymerization (DP) up to 15.

The occurrence of l-galactose in snail galactans
Carbohydrate Research, 1985Abstract The occurrence of l -galactose ( l -Gal) was investigated in twelve preparations of snail galactans from nine different species. l -Gal (11–15%) was found not only in members of the family Helicidae , a highly developed group among the Pulmonata , but was detected also in a galactan of the oldest phylogenetic subclass of snails in the ...

Structural and Immunochemical Investigations on Snail Galactans
1988Snail galactans are highly branched polysaccharides which are synthesized in the albumen glands of pulmonate and prosobranchiate snails and added to the perivitelline fluid of their eggs as nutritive material for the growing embryos. (1) Snail galactans are predominantly composed of D Galactose linked glycosidically l→3 and l→6 (2,3).
