Dwarf spheroidal galaxies: Keystones of galaxy evolution [PDF]
Dwarf spheroidal galaxies are the most insignificant extragalactic stellar systems in terms of their visibility, but potentially very significant in terms of their role in the formation and evolution of much more luminous galaxies. We discuss the present observational data and their implications for theories of the formation and evolution of both dwarf

Simulations All the Way Up! An Atheist's Response to the Fine‐Tuning Argument
ABSTRACT So the Fine‐tuning Argument goes, because it is so unlikely for the physical constants of the laws of nature to have taken the values that they in fact take, we should significantly raise our credence that God exists. Simulation Arguments argue that our world might be (or, in stronger versions, that it probably is) a mere computer simulation ...

Mind and Cosmos as Throughput Systems: A Convergence Through the Throughput Model
ABSTRACT This paper advances a conceptual and mathematical foundations approach by applying the throughput model (TPM) to cosmic phenomena, reframing the universe as an extended information processing system. TPM's four stages, Perception, Information, Judgement and Decision Choice, are reformulated in explicit information‐theoretic and dynamical ...

Intergroup conflicts have a wide range of impacts, including affecting movement and ranging patterns. Previous studies found contrasting movement responses to intergroup conflicts, but no explanation for these differences has been suggested. However, these can be broadly grouped into ‘conflict avoidance' responses: avoiding areas close to the fight ...

The formation of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies and nucleated dwarf galaxies [PDF]
Ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) have similar properties as massive globular clusters or the nuclei of nucleated galaxies. Recent observations suggesting a high dark matter content and a steep spatial distribution within groups and clusters provide new clues as to their origins.

In Central Africa, traditional hunting is central to the way of life of local communities. However, increasing demand for wild meat has raised concerns about the sustainability of this practice. With a year‐long analysis of hunting strategies and their impact at the outskirts of Salonga National Park, Democratic Republic of the Congo, we showed a ...

Abstract String theory has strong implications for cosmology, implying the absence of a cosmological constant, ruling out single‐field slow‐roll inflation, and that black holes decay. The origins of these statements are elucidated within the string‐theoretical swampland programme.

The Pointing Error Due To Laser Propagation in Space Plasma for TianQin Gravitational Wave Detection
Abstract TianQin, a space‐borne gravitational wave observatory, is designed to detect gravitational‐wave signals via laser interferometry. As the inhomogeneous space plasma surrounds the inter‐satellite laser links, the propagation of the laser in space plasma can introduce pointing error noise.

The Disruption of the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy [PDF]
Numerical simulations of dwarf spheroidal galaxies undergoing several close encounters with the Milky Way are described. By comparing our models to observed properties of the recently discovered dwarf galaxy in Sagittarius (Sgr), we discuss implications of our results for the formation and evolution of the Milky Way system.

ABSTRACT Planetary nebulae represent a late evolutionary phase of low‐ to intermediate‐mass stars. In this article, we present the serendipitous discovery of a previously unknown, faint potential Galactic planetary nebula (PN) in the constellation Camelopardalis, identified during a survey‐inspection, aiming at the detection of dwarf companions of the ...
