Identification of filamentary structures in the environment of superclusters of galaxies in the Local Universe

open access: yes, 2020
International audienceContext. Characterization of the internal structure of the superclusters of galaxies (walls, filaments, and knots where the clusters are located) is crucial for understanding the formation of the large-scale structure and for ...

Out There No One Has a Right to Die

open access: yesBioethics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The eventual goal of space exploration is to colonize exoplanets and their moons outside our solar system. This is a dangerous and immoral endeavour. The extraterrestrial life forms encountered would be hostile, vulnerable or both, and the descendants of the original pioneers would be involuntarily exposed to hazardous conditions and ...

Toll‐like receptor 4 mediates lipopolysaccharide‐induced emesis

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Background and Purpose Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induces inflammation and sepsis through Toll‐like receptor 4 (TLR4) activation. Common laboratory animals do not exhibit emesis, but administration of LPS in piglets, cats, and dogs induces emesis via peripheral mechanisms.

Story2Board: A Training‐Free Approach for Expressive Visual Storytelling

open access: yesComputer Graphics Forum, EarlyView.
Abstract We present Story2Board, a training‐free framework for expressive storyboard generation from natural language. Existing methods narrowly focus on subject identity, overlooking key aspects of visual storytelling such as spatial composition, background evolution, and narrative pacing.

A catalog of compact groups of galaxies in the RSDSS commissioning data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Compact groups (CGs) of galaxies--relatively poor groups of galaxies in which the typical separations between members is of the order of a galaxy diameter--offer an exceptional laboratory for the study of dense galaxian environments with short (<1Gyr)

Feedback and environmental effects in elliptical galaxies

open access: yes, 2009
The role of the environment of an elliptical galaxy on its hot interstellar gas is discussed. In general, the X-ray halos of early-type galaxies tend to be smaller and fainter in denser environments, with the exception of group-central galaxies.

DiskScissors: Cutting Arbitrary‐Topology Solids for Bijective Mapping

open access: yesComputer Graphics Forum, EarlyView.
Abstract An algorithm for cutting solid objects in a topology‐controlled manner is presented. Concretely, given a loop on the object boundary, a disk‐topology cut surface bounded by the loop is constructed in the interior. In contrast to various previous approaches, both disk topology and conformance to the prescribed loop are ensured by construction ...

Scalable Computation of Topological Abstractions for Scalar Data

open access: yesComputer Graphics Forum, EarlyView.
Abstract Topological data analysis has become an important tool for large scale scalar data analysis and visualization, efficiently extracting the inherent structure and features of interest of the data. However, with growing dataset sizes and complexity, it is increasingly becoming infeasible to compute topological abstractions of interest in serial ...
