Radial migration in disc galaxies — I. Transient spiral structure and dynamics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We seek to understand the origin of radial migration in spiral galaxies by analysing in detail the structure and evolution of an idealized, isolated galactic disc.

Arabidopsis thaliana FANCONI ANAEMIA I (FANCI) has roles in the repair of interstrand crosslinks and CRISPR‐Cas9 induced DNA double strand breaks

open access: yesThe Plant Journal, Volume 124, Issue 2, October 2025.
SUMMARY DNA repair is crucial for genome stability, in particular for plants which are exposed to high levels of damage arising from UV irradiation, soil pollutants and reactive oxygen species. Damage that affects both strands of the DNA duplex is harder to repair due to both the lack of a template strand and the potential for physical separation of ...

UV–Vis Spectra of Carbonic Acid: Rationalizing Experimental Redshifts between Monomer and Bulk based on (H2CO3)n Calculations

open access: yesChemPhysChem, Volume 26, Issue 18, September 19, 2025.
In bulk carbonic acid (e.g., in interstellar icy dust grains) cluster formation produces two distinct UV‐Vis spectral features redshifted by ≈2 eV (25 nm) and by ≈5 eV (80 nm) compared to gas phase single molecule carbonic acid 's adiabatic ionization energy. Theory and experiment were used to investigate the origin of these shifts.

OBSERVATIONAL EVIDENCE AGAINST LONG-LIVED SPIRAL ARMS IN GALAXIES [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We test whether the spiral patterns apparent in many large disk galaxies should be thought of as dynamical features that are stationary in a corotating frame for ≳ tdyn, as implied by the density wave approach for explaining spiral arms.

Staphylococcus aureus AgrA Modulators From South African Antimicrobial Plants

open access: yesChemistry &Biodiversity, Volume 22, Issue 9, September 2025.
The study workflow utilized validated in silico [molecular docking, fingerprinting, pharmacokinetics prediction, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, ligand‐protein contact maps] tools to bioprospect a wide variety of metabolites surveyed from South African plants with antimicrobial activities, and target them against the key S.

Stellar diffusion in barred spiral galaxies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We characterize empirically the radial diffusion of stars in the plane of a typical barred disk galaxy by calculating the local spatial diffusion coefficient and diffusion time-scale for bulge-disk-halo N-body self-consistent systems which initially ...

THE OPACITY OF SPIRAL GALAXY DISKS [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The opacity of foreground spiral disks can be probed from the number of distant galaxies seen through them. To calibrate this number for effects other than the dust extinction, Gonzalez et al. (1998) developed the "Synthetic Field Method". A synthetic field is an extincted Hubble Deep Field added to the science field.
