Triggering Star Formation by Galaxy-Galaxy Interactions [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 2004
We analyzed the effects of having a close companion on the star formation activity of galaxies in the 8K galaxy pair catalog selected from the 2dFGRS. We found that, statistically, galaxies with rp < 25h−1 kpc and ΔV < 100km s−1 have enhanced star formation with respect to isolated galaxies with the same luminosity and redshift distribution.

Targeted decrease of portal hepatic pressure gradient improves ascites control after TIPS

open access: yesHepatology, EarlyView., 2022
The river diagram demonstrates that after transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt insertion (TIPS) the majority of patients without ascites and 50% of the patients with ascites detectable at ultrasound, show the best response in the long term follow‐up.

A LAW FOR STAR FORMATION IN GALAXIES [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2011
We study the galactic-scale triggering of star formation. We find that the largest mass-scale not stabilized by rotation, a well defined quantity in a rotating system and with clear dynamical meaning, strongly correlates with the star formation rate in a wide range of galaxies.

ON THE TIMESCALE FOR STAR FORMATION IN GALAXIES [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2009
The timescale for star formation, a measure of how quickly neutral gas is being converted to stars, is considerably longer than typical dynamical timescales associated with a galactic disk. For purposes of modeling galaxy evolution, however, it would be extremely attractive if the star formation timescale were proportional to an easily derived ...

Star formation in southern Seyfert galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1998
We have produced radio maps, using the Australia Telescope Compact Array, of the central regions of six southern type 2 Seyfert galaxies (NGC 1365, 4945, 6221, 6810, 7582 and Circinus) with circumnuclear star formation, to estimate the relative contribution of star formation activity compared to activity from the active galactic nucleus (AGN).

Quenching star formation in cluster galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2014
In order to understand the processes that quench star formation within rich clusters, we construct a library of subhalo orbits drawn from $Λ$CDM cosmological N-body simulations of four rich clusters. The orbits are combined with models of star formation followed by quenching in the cluster environment.
