Distribution and Dynamics of Molecular Gas in the Galaxy M51. III. Kinematics of Molecular Gas [PDF]

open access: yesPublications of the Astronomical Society of Japan, 1997
We present here a study of the dynamics of the molecular gas in the spiral galaxy M51 using CO data obtained with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope. From the distribution of the radial velocity of the CO gas, the velocity components parallel and perpendicular to the spiral arms were determined for each spiral phase.

From nearby to distant galaxies: kinematical and dynamical studies

open access: yes, 2009
Kinematical studies of low and high redshift galaxies enables to probe galaxy formation and evolution scenarios. Integral field spectroscopy is a powerful tool to study with accuracy nearby galaxies kinematics. Recent observations also gives a new 2D vision of high redshift galaxies kinematics.

Shell galaxies: kinematical signature of shells, satellite galaxy disruption and dynamical friction

open access: yes, 2013
Stellar shells observed in many giant elliptical and lenticular as well as a few spiral and dwarf galaxies presumably result from radial minor mergers of galaxies. We show that the line-of-sight velocity distribution of the shells has a quadruple-peaked shape.

Deep Kinematics and Dynamics of Edge-on S0 Galaxies. I. NGC 3115

open access: yes, 1993
As a first step of a program aimed to the detection of dark matter (or radial variations of M/L) in early-type galaxies, we report deep spectroscopic observations of the bulge-dominated edge-on S0 galaxy NGC 3115, made at ESO, La Silla, using EFOSC at the 3.6m telescope and EMMI at NTT.

The dynamics of the dE galaxy FS76 : bridging the kinematic dichotomy between Es and dEs

open access: yes, 2001
We present major and minor axis kinematics out to 2 half-light radii for the bright (M_B=-16.7) dwarf elliptical FS76, a member of the NGC5044 group. Its velocity dispersion is 46 \pm 2 km/s in the center and rises to 70 \pm 10 km/s at half-light radius. Beyond 1R_e the dispersion starts to fall again.

The empirical laws of galaxy dynamics: from gas kinematics to weak lensing

open access: yes
Galaxies obey a set of strict dynamical laws, which imply a close coupling between the visible matter (stars and gas) and the observed dynamics (set by dark matter in the standard cosmological context). Here we review recent results from weak gravitational lensing, which allows studying the empirical laws of galaxy dynamics out to exceedingly large ...

Kinematical small-scale fluctuations do not affect the measurement of the dynamical mass of galaxies

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society
ABSTRACT The stellar kinematics of low-mass galaxies are usually observed to be very unsmooth with significant kinematical fluctuations in small scales, which cannot be consistent with the projected centrosymmetric stellar kinematics obtained from commonly used dynamical models.
