It is argued that within the standard Big Bang cosmological model the bulk of the mass of the luminous parts of the large galaxies likely had been assembled by redshift z ∼ 10. Galaxy assembly this early would be difficult to fit in the widely discussed adiabatic cold dark matter model for structure formation ...

Theories of galaxy formation via hierarchical clustering of cold dark matter and by fragmentation of gaseous pancakes or shells are reviewed and compared. Dissipative processes are crucial to all theories of galaxy formation, and are discussed in terms of a simple model involving multiple cloud interactions.

We review the current theory of how galaxies form within the cosmological framework provided by the cold dark matter paradigm for structure formation. Beginning with the pre-galactic evolution of baryonic material we describe the analytical and numerical understanding of how baryons condense into galaxies, what determines the structure of those ...

Joint galaxy–galaxy lensing and clustering constraints on galaxy formation [PDF]
ABSTRACT We compare predictions for galaxy–galaxy lensing profiles and clustering from the Henriques et al. public version of the Munich semi-analytical model (SAM) of galaxy formation and the IllustrisTNG suite, primarily TNG300, with observations from KiDS + GAMA and SDSS-DR7 using four different selection functions for the lenses ...

Two-phase galaxy formation [PDF]
We propose and test a scenario for the assembly and evolution of luminous matter in galaxies which substantially differs from that adopted by other semianalytic models. As for the dark matter (DM), we follow the detailed evolution of halos within the canonical LCDM cosmology using standard Montecarlo methods.

Galaxy Formation: Isocam Counts [PDF]
Detailed observations in the optical do not allow to discriminate between the following scenarii of galaxy formation: - synchronous formation at large redshift (z > 7). - hierarchical merging, down to z ≤ 1, of proto-galactic lumps formed at very high redshift (≈ 10).

A review on numerical simulations of galaxy formation is given. Different numerical methods to solve collisionless and gas dynamical systems are outlined and one particular simulation technique, Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics, is discussed in some detail. After a short discussion of the most relevant physical processes which affect the dynamics of the
