Gas accretion from the cosmic web feeding disk galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2016
AbstractDisk galaxies in cosmological numerical simulations grow by accreting gas from the cosmic web. This gas reaches the external disk, and then spirals in dragged along by tidal forces and/or disk instabilities. The importance of gas infall is as clear from numerical simulations as it is obscure to observations.

Broad line emission from iron K- and L-shell transitions in the active galaxy 1H 0707-495

open access: yes, 2009
Since the 1995 discovery of the broad iron K-line emission from the Seyfert galaxy MCG-6-30-15 (ref. 1), broad iron K lines have been found in emission from several other Seyfert galaxies, from accreting stellar-mass black holes and even from accreting ...

Signatures of Accretion Disks in Quasar Microlensing [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
We propose that the relative variability on short timescales of the multiple images of a lensed quasar, after removal of the time delay, may be caused by hot spots or other moving structures in the accretion disk crossing microlens caustics caused by ...

Long-term optical and X-ray variability of the Seyfert galaxy Markarian 79 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
We present the results of concurrent X-ray and optical monitoring of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 79 over a period of more than 5 yr. We find that on short to medium time-scales (days to a few tens of days) the 2–10 keV X-ray and optical u- and V-band fluxes

THE ROLE OF COLD FLOWS IN THE ASSEMBLY OF GALAXY DISKS [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
We use high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulations to demonstrate that cold flow gas accretion, particularly along filaments, modifies the standard picture of gas accretion and cooling onto galaxy disks.

TwO Parameters Semi Empirical Model (TOPSEM): Galaxy Evolution and Bulge/Disk Dicothomy from Two-stage Halo Accretion

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
In recent years, increasing attention has been devoted to semi-empirical, data-driven models to tackle some aspects of the complex and still largely debated topic of galaxy formation and evolution. We here present a new semi-empirical model whose marking

Noble gases and nitrogen in material from asteroid Bennu

open access: yesMeteoritics &Planetary Science, EarlyView.
Abstract We report the elemental and isotopic abundances of all stable noble gases (helium, neon, argon, krypton, and xenon) in eight particles from asteroid Bennu returned by NASA's OSIRIS‐REx mission. We also report nitrogen abundances and isotopic ratios that were analyzed alongside neon and argon in four additional Bennu particles.

Simulating supernova feedback in galaxy disks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In this thesis I examine supernova feedback in hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy disks. Understanding this process entails the numerical evaluation of cooling in radiative shocks, and we present a set of simulations using two widely used numerical ...

Iron-Line Emission as a Probe of Bardeen-Petterson Accretion Disks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
In this work we show that Bardeen-Petterson accretion disks can exhibit unique, detectable features in relativistically broadened emission line profiles.
