The relationship between Gas and Galaxies [PDF]
We have investigated the 2D 2-point correlation function, ƐAG, between low column density Lya absorbers and galaxies at a redshift z ~ 1 for the first time.

One of the biggest challenges in cosmology, the Hubble tension, requires independent measurements of H _0 , and strong lensing with time-delay cosmography is a promising avenue.

Summary Orchard fruits such as pear and apple are important for ensuring global food security and agricultural economy as they not only provide essential nutrients, but also support biodiversity and ecosystem services. Breeders, growers and plant researchers constantly study desirable tree morphological features and floral characteristics to ensure ...

When is a Bulge Not a Bulge? Revealing the Satellite Nature of NGC 5474’s Bulge
A satellite galaxy of the nearby spiral M101, NGC 5474 has a prominent bulge offset from the kinematic center of the underlying star-forming disk that has gained attention in recent years.

A review of multiscale numerical modeling of rock mechanics and rock engineering
Multiscale numerical methods of rock mechanics and rock engineering are reviewed, and the review results show that more attention should be paid to the development of an advanced constitutive model in addition to numerical techniques themselves. Abstract Rock is geometrically and mechanically multiscale in nature, and the traditional phenomenological ...

On the Origin of the Variety of Velocity Dispersion Profiles of Galaxies
Observed and simulated galaxies exhibit a significant variation in their velocity dispersion profiles. We examine the inner and outer slopes of stellar velocity dispersion profiles using integral field spectroscopy data from two surveys, SAMI (for z < 0 ...

Abstract In this study, we have investigated short‐period (< ${< } $1 hr) atmospheric gravity waves (AGWs) in the Arctic mesosphere‐lower thermosphere (MLT) region during January of 2014, 2015, and 2016. We used OH (3,1) band emission data from the Advanced Mesospheric Temperature Mapper (AMTM) at the Arctic Lidar Observatory for Middle Atmosphere ...

On the kinematical behavior of galaxies in clusters
The sample of 15 galaxy clusters published by Dressler and Shectman (1988) has been analyzed to search for a tendency for spiral and irregular galaxies to have greater velocity dispersion than the ellipticals and lenticulars. It is shown that this trend is highly significant, with a probability of less than 0.05 percent that it may result from ...

Identifying Signatures of Inflow onto Face-on Galaxies Using the Balmer Decrement
Isolated star-forming galaxies require inflows of fresh gas from the surrounding medium to sustain episodes of star formation over time. However, there are very few direct detections of accretion onto external galaxies.

Kinematic Distances of Galaxies in the Local Volume
We consider the kinematic distances to nearby galaxies obtained by the Numerical Action Method (NAM) based on the Cosmic-flow-3 survey data. NAM distances are compared with 418 high-precision distances measured by the Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB) method using the Hubble Space Telescope.
