Most of the studies of the thick disk and halo populations suffer from biases due to selection effects. The proportions of these populations to be found in the solar neighbourhood are very small, and to obtain a significant sample of such rare stars, one has to select them by a criterion: kinematical (high proper motion) or chemical (metal poor).

Kinematics of an Anaemic Cluster Galaxy

We present new HI and CO data including velocity information of NGC 4548, an anaemic galaxy in the Virgo Cluster. The distribution of the atomic gas shows a ring-like structure. The HI rotation curve is deduced and can be extrapolated inwards with the help of the CO data. The derived molecular fraction decreases continuously up to a radius of about 40″

Kinematic lopsidedness in spiral galaxies

Morphological asymmetries between the approaching and receding sides in both the stellar and neutral hydrogen distribution are often observed in spiral galaxies. Here, attention is drawn to the presence of large-scale asymmetries in the kinematics of the neutral hydrogen gas. An example of such a kinematically lopsided galaxy is presented and discussed.
