Galactic Magnetic Fields. I. Theoretical Model and Scaling Relations

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Galactic dynamo models have generally relied on input parameters that are very challenging to constrain. We address this problem by developing a model that uses observable quantities as input: the galaxy rotation curve, the surface densities of the gas ...

The MeerKAT Fornax Survey

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
Large-scale magnetic fields in galaxy clusters can influence their physics and the evolution of cluster-embedded galaxies. These properties remain poorly constrained due to a historical lack of high-sensitivity and high-resolution spectropolarimetric ...

SPH simulations of magnetic fields in galaxy clusters

open access: yes, 1998
We perform cosmological, hydrodynamic simulations of magnetic fields in galaxy clusters. The computational code combines the special-purpose hardware Grape for calculating gravitational interaction, and smooth-particle hydrodynamics for the gas component.

The First Magnetic Fields

open access: yes, 2011
We review current ideas on the origin of galactic and extragalactic magnetic fields. We begin by summarizing observations of magnetic fields at cosmological redshifts and on cosmological scales.

A Pioneering Experiment Combining Single-antenna and Aperture-synthesis Data to Measure Faraday Rotation with GMIMS and the CGPS

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
Structures in the magnetoionic medium exist across a wide range of angular sizes owing to large-scale magnetic fields coherent over the Galactic spiral arms combined with small-scale fluctuations in the magnetic field and electron density resulting from ...

Astrophysical Magnetic Fields and Topics in Galaxy Formation

open access: yes, 1997
The grant was used to support theoretical research on a variety of astro-physical topics falling broadly into those described by the proposal: galaxy formation, astrophysical magnetic fields, magnetized accretion disks in AGN, new physics, and other ...

Disentangling Magnetic Fields in NGC 6946 with Wide-band Polarimetry

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We present λ 13 cm polarization observations of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 6946 with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) to examine the nearside halo magnetic fields. Despite λ 13 cm exhibiting similar two-dimensional morphology as observed

Interstellar Polarization Survey. V. Galactic Magnetic Field Tomography of the Spiral Arms Using Optical and Near-infrared Starlight Polarization

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
Interstellar linear polarization occurs when starlight passes through elongated dust grains aligned by interstellar magnetic fields. The observed polarization can come from different dust structures along the line of sight (LOS).
