Magnetic fields in galaxies

The Astronomy and Astrophysics Review, 1993
Recent years have seen an amazing development in our knowledge of the magnetic fields in the universe. The last ten years were crucial in our realization of the importance of the magnetic fields in galaxies. While a lot of the earlier data on our Galaxy depended on optical observations, the bulk of the recent results depend on radio measurements.

Magnetic Fields in the Galaxy

Geophysical & Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics, 1987
The observations of the optical polarization of starlight [1,2] showed large-scale alignment of the vectors which was interpreted to be due to galactic magnetic fields which align interstellar grains [3]. The data on star polarization accumulated over many years (e.g. [4,5,6]) giving in the end a large sample of objects at known distances.

Magnetic Fields in Galaxies

2014
The hadronic constituent of galaxies consists of gas and stars, with only a minor contribution of dust. These components rotate in a gravitational potential made up by stars and dark matter. In spiral galaxies, the gas has a neutral and an ionised phase.

Magnetic fields in the galaxy and galaxies

EAS Publications Series, 2005
Magnetic fields are found everywhere in the cosmic Universe. They have been known to exist on the Earth for centuries. They were detected in the Sun, measured in situ in the planets, observed in stars, galaxies and clusters of galaxies. Magnetic fields are responsible for many observed effects like radio continuum emission, jets, beamed emission in ...

Magnetic fields in galaxy clusters

Astronomische Nachrichten, 2013
AbstractWhile it is established that galaxy clusters host magnetic fields of the order of a few µ G, both, their origin as well as their role in the intracluster medium (ICM) remain unclear. I will review the observational evidence for magnetic fields in galaxy clusters and present various lines of research that study the effects of magnetic fields in ...

Magnetic fields in normal galaxies

Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. Series A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, 2000
Linearly polarized radio continuum emission is a powerful tool for studying the strength and structure of interstellar magnetic fields in galaxies. Interstellar magnetic fields with a well–ordered spiral structure exist in grand–design, flocculent and even irregular galaxies.

Magnetic fields of interacting galaxies

Geophysical & Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics, 1990
Abstract The possibility of detecting magnetic fields away from galactic disks or bars in bridges between interacting galaxies is discussed. In the case of the Magellanic Cloud system recent 2.4GHz measurements have confirmed fields in the SMC, LMC and the connecting bridge.
