Magnetic fields in galaxy clusters

Astronomische Nachrichten, 2013
AbstractWhile it is established that galaxy clusters host magnetic fields of the order of a few µ G, both, their origin as well as their role in the intracluster medium (ICM) remain unclear. I will review the observational evidence for magnetic fields in galaxy clusters and present various lines of research that study the effects of magnetic fields in ...

Galaxy Magnetic Fields and Hidden Matter in Galaxies

1987
Since there have been several suggestions at this meeting that galaxy magnetic fields might lie at the origin of spiral structure in galaxies, and since there have been a few doubting voices raised concerning the density wave theory of spiral structure, I feel it is appropriate to start by reminding you that there is in fact a fairly well founded ...

Observations of Magnetic Fields in Galaxies

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2005
Magnetic fields play an important role in galaxies. Interstellar magnetic fields are strongest in massive spiral arms of galaxies (20–30 μG) and in nuclear starburst regions (up to 100 μG). Processes related to star formation tangle the field lines, so that little polarization is observed in star‐forming regions.

The Magnetic Field at the Center of the Galaxy

1990
The polarization of the 100 μm emission from the 3 pc dust ring at the center of the Galaxy has been measured at five points. The magnetic field inferred from the measurements lies in the plane of the ring but does not appear to be toroidal. We estimate a field B ≈ 10−2 gauss.
