Galaxy zoo: stronger bars facilitate quenching in star-forming galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2021
ABSTRACTWe have used Galaxy Zoo DECaLS (GZD) to study strong and weak bars in disc galaxies. Out of the 314 000 galaxies in GZD, we created a volume-limited sample (0.01 < z < 0.05, Mr < − 18.96) which contains 1867 galaxies with reliable volunteer bar classifications in the ALFALFA footprint.

The Growth of Red Sequence Galaxies in a Cosmological Hydrodynamic Simulation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
We examine the cosmic growth of the red sequence in a cosmological hydrodynamic simulation that includes a heuristic prescription for quenching star formation that yields a realistic passive galaxy population today.

ΣSFR–M ∗ Diagram: A Valuable Galaxy Evolution Diagnostic to Complement (s)SFR–M ∗ Diagrams

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
The specific star formation rate (sSFR) is commonly used to describe the level of galaxy star formation (SF) and to select quenched galaxies. However, since it is a relative measure of the young-to-old population, an ambiguity in its interpretation may ...

Spatially Resolved Stellar Populations of 0.3 < z < 6.0 Galaxies in WHL 0137–08 and MACS 0647+70 Clusters as Revealed by JWST: How Do Galaxies Grow and Quench over Cosmic Time?

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
We study the spatially resolved stellar populations of 444 galaxies at 0.3 < z < 6.0 in two clusters (WHL 0137–08 and MACS 0647+70) and a blank field, combining imaging data from the Hubble Space Telescope and JWST to perform spatially resolved spectral ...

The UV properties of E+A galaxies: constraints on feedback-driven quenching of star formation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We present the first large-scale study of E+A (post-starburst) galaxies that incorporates photometry in the ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths. We find that the starburst that creates the E+A galaxy typically takes place within the last Gyr and creates a high ...

The environmental dependence of rapidly quenching and rejuvenating galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2020
ABSTRACT By combining H α flux measurements from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with ultraviolet (UV) flux observations from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX), we examine the environmental dependence (through central/satellite distinction) of the rapid quenching and rejuvenation of galaxies.

Galaxy evolution in groups and clusters: satellite star formation histories and quenching timescales in a hierarchical Universe [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Satellite galaxies in groups and clusters are more likely to have low star formation rates (SFR) and lie on the red-sequence than central (field) galaxies.

From Starburst to Quiescence: Testing AGN feedback in Rapidly Quenching Post-Starburst Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Post-starbursts are galaxies in transition from the blue cloud to the red sequence. Although they are rare today, integrated over time they may be an important pathway to the red sequence. This work uses SDSS, GALEX, and WISE observations to identify the

Mapping stellar content to dark matter halos - III.Environmental dependence and conformity of galaxy colours

open access: yes, 2017
Recent studies suggest that the quenching properties of galaxies are correlated over several mega-parsecs. The large-scale "galactic conformity" phenomenon around central galaxies has been regarded as a potential signature of "galaxy assembly bias" or ...

CANDELS Sheds Light on the Environmental Quenching of Low-mass Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We investigate the environmental quenching of galaxies, especially those with stellar masses (M*)$10^{10.5} M_\odot$) within a redshift range. At a given redshift and M*, the environmental quenching effect is considered to be observed if the $d_{proj ...
