Resolved Stellar Populations in Nearby Galaxy Halos

2009
The results of the three different studies of resolved stellar populations in galaxies across the Hubble sequence based on HST ACS and WFPC2 data are summarized in this contribution. (1) The ACS observations of the stellar halo of the gE galaxy NGC 5128 revealed the core helium-burning stars located in the red clump.

Stellar streams and dark matter halos of luminous galaxies

New Astronomy Reviews, 2005
Abstract We have measured the mass of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) using a Keck/DEIMOS kinematic survey of red giant branch (RGB) stars lying in a giant tidal stream from a previous galactic encounter. The most likely value of the total mass of M31 is M (total) = 6.5 × 10 11  Mo out to 145 kpc.
