Simulations of galactic winds and starbursts in galaxy clusters [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy and Astrophysics, 2006
We present an investigation of the metal enrichment of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) by galactic winds and merger-driven starbursts. We use combined N-body/hydrodynamic simulations with a semi-numerical galaxy formation model. The mass loss by galactic winds is obtained by calculating transonic solutions of steady state outflows, driven by thermal ...

Galactic winds from primeval galaxies

Astrophysics and Space Science, 2007
Ultra-high resolution hydrodynamic simulations using 10243 grid points are performed of early supernova burst in a forming galaxy, with properties similar to those inferred for Lyman α emitters (LAEs) and Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs). We show that, at the earliest stages of less than 300 Myr, continual supernova explosions produce multitudinous hot ...

The Role of Galactic Winds in Galaxy Formation

2006
Astrophysical processes such as gas cooling and feedback, i.e. gas reheating from stars and quasars, render galaxy formation quite complicated compared to large-scale structure formation. Empirical calibrations of the star formation rate and supernova-feedback efficiency have proven critical for simulating the formation and evolution of galaxies in ...

Wind from a starburst galaxy nucleus

Nature, 1985
Galaxies with highly active star formation regions (starburst galaxies) are inferred to have high supernova rates in the region of activity1,2. If most of the supernova energy input is thermalized, a strong wind is driven out of the active region. The wind is probably so fast that gravitational forces are not involved.

Outflows and galactic winds of dwarf galaxies

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2005
Galactic winds are expected to be nearly omnipresent in dwarf galaxies based on theoretical considerations and several indirect observational evidences. The direct observational proof for their presence is far more elusive, contrary to the widespread expectation that dwarf galaxies are very favourable places to observe galactic winds.

Magnetohydrodynamic Wind Driven by Cosmic Rays in a Rotating Galaxy

2001
We have calculated the dynamics of mass loss from a disk galaxy with the escaping high energy component of the ISM (cosmic rays), and the magnetic field. The coupling between cosmic rays and plasma is provided by the resonant excitation of small-scale magnetic field fluctuations (MHD waves).
