DNA barcoding for identification of species involved in wildlife strikes at Brazilian airports
A collaborative network of 42 Brazilian airports applied DNA barcoding to identify 80 species involved in wildlife strikes. Among them, 32 species (17 birds and 15 bats) were not currently available in Brazil's wildlife strike reporting database, underscoring the value of molecular tools for strengthening wildlife strike monitoring. White patches of male capercaillie tails vary greatly in coverage and symmetry, but the amount of white or the symmetry of the patches was not associated with mate choice. Female choice does not appear to be based on the white patterns on the tail. Highly visible at dawn, the patches may instead facilitate individual identification.
