Normal covering numbers for Sn$S_n$ and An$A_n$ and additive combinatorics

open access: yesBulletin of the London Mathematical Society, Volume 57, Issue 11, Page 3307-3325, November 2025.
Abstract The normal covering number γ(G)$\gamma (G)$ of a noncyclic group G$G$ is the minimum number of proper subgroups whose conjugates cover the group. We give various estimates for γ(Sn)$\gamma (S_n)$ and γ(An)$\gamma (A_n)$ depending on the arithmetic structure of n$n$. In particular we determine the limsups over γ(Sn)/n$\gamma (S_n) / n$ and γ(An)

Fuzzy Bases of Fuzzy Domains

open access: yesJournal of Applied Mathematics, 2013
This paper is an attempt to develop quantitative domain theory over frames. Firstly, we propose the notion of a fuzzy basis, and several equivalent characterizations of fuzzy bases are obtained.

On separable algebras in Grothendieck Galois theory

open access: yesLe Matematiche, 1996
We give an explicit proof of the fundamental theorem of Grothendieck Galois theory: the category of separable algebras over a field K is anti-equivalent to the category of continuous actions on finite sets of the profinite fundamental group of K.

Galois Theory

open access: yes
These are the notes for an undergraduate course at the University of Edinburgh, 2021-2023. Assuming basic knowledge of ring theory, group theory and linear algebra, the notes lay out the theory of field extensions and their Galois groups, up to and including the fundamental theorem of Galois theory.

Modularity of trianguline Galois representations

open access: yesForum of Mathematics, Sigma
We use the theory of trianguline $(\varphi ,\Gamma )$ -modules over pseudorigid spaces to prove a modularity lifting theorem for certain Galois representations which are trianguline at p, including those with characteristic p coefficients.

Meromorphic Non-Integrability of Several 3D Dynamical Systems

open access: yesEntropy, 2017
In this paper, we apply the differential Galoisian approach to investigate the meromorphic non-integrability of a class of 3D equations in mathematical physics, including Nosé–Hoover equations, the Lü system, the Rikitake-like system and Rucklidge ...

Permutations of massive vacua

open access: yesJournal of High Energy Physics, 2017
We discuss the permutation group G of massive vacua of four-dimensional gauge theories with N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 1 supersymmetry that arises upon tracing loops in the space of couplings. We concentrate on superconformal N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 4 and N $$ \
