Novelty for the flora of Espírito Santo, Brazil: a new species of Ouratea Aubl. (Ochnaceae)

open access: yesNordic Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Here, we describe and illustrate the new species Ouratea oberdanii Fraga & Deccache, which is named after Dr Oberdan José Pereira. This new species is found in the mountainous regions of the evergreen Atlantic Forest in the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo. Ouratea oberdanii is similar to O. linearis (A.Gray) Sastre & Offroy and O.

The disruption of seed dispersal networks: disentangling the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Seed dispersal by frugivores is a central process linking plant reproduction, animal foraging, population persistence, and ecosystem resilience. Currently, the spatial template sustaining these interactions is rapidly reconfigured by habitat loss and fragmentation promoted by human activity.

Open letter: The need for a site‐based biodiversity standard measuring and certifying impacts from nature‐based projects

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Despite growing investment in restoration, weak accountability and poor biodiversity monitoring mean many projects fail to achieve ecological recovery. The Global Biodiversity Standard (TGBS) offers a practical way to ensure that restoration finance delivers measurable gains for nature.

A short proof of Gamas’s theorem

open access: yesLinear Algebra and its Applications, 2009
If χ^λis the irreducible character of the symmetric group S_n corresponding to the partition λof n then we may symmetrize a tensor v_1 \otimes ... \otimes v_n by χ^λ. Gamas's theorem states that the result is not zero if and only if we can partition the set {v_i} into linearly independent sets whose sizes are the parts of the transpose of λ.

Proposing a Framework to Center Justice in Ambitious Science Teaching

open access: yesScience Education, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Though educators and researchers have developed shared theory and language for priorities necessary to disrupt the status quo toward more equitable science education, we lack a tool that organizes sets of teaching practices across an instructional unit to support enactment and rehearsal.

Fractional Logistic Equation Applied to Brazilian COVID-19 Data

open access: yesCQD Revista Eletrônica Paulista de Matemática, 2022
In this paper we analyzed a fractional logistic model applied to Brazilian COVID-19 data. In order to solve the logistic model, we presented a modified version of Adams-Bashforth numerical method. All numerical simulations were performed in MATLAB. As a

Cyanogenic Compounds, Physicochemical Parameters and Metals in Water From Cassava Processing Areas: A Study in the Brazilian Amazon, Using Multivariate Analysis

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study evaluated the water quality of artesian wells and effluents generated in cassava processing in a rural area of Bragança, Pará, with emphasis on physicochemical parameters, multielement composition, and cyanogenic compounds. The well water presented specific nonconformities, highlighting pH values below the recommended level and high

Pair Approximation Models for Disease Spread

open access: yes, 2005
We consider a Susceptible-Infective-Recovered (SIR) model, where the mechanism for the renewal of susceptibles is demographic, on a ring with next nearest neighbour interactions, and a family of correlated pair approximations (CPA), parametrized by a ...
