On the design of lottery games

Journal of the Operational Research Society, 2003
We describe a model of participation in lottery games designed to address the optimisation of tax revenue in state-sponsored lotteries. The model treats participants dynamically and examines a long-run equilibrium. A novel high frequency approximation is used to turn the problem into a static, state-contingent deterministic programming problem.

Elegance in Game Design

IEEE Transactions on Computational Intelligence and AI in Games, 2012
This paper explores notions of elegance and shibui in combinatorial game design, and describes simple computational models for their estimation. Elegance is related to a game's simplicity, clarity, and efficiency, while shibui is a more complex concept from Japanese aesthetics that also incorporates depth.

Sensified Gaming

Proceedings of the 13th International Conference on Advances in Computer Entertainment Technology, 2016
Participatory Sensing, i.e. collaboratively taking sensor measurements with mobile devices in a Citizen Science fashion, has become increasingly popular. Because such scenarios often require a critical mass of users, applying gamification to different areas in order to increase user engagement has been proposed. However, existing attempts often default

Instructional design as game design

Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Foundations of Digital Games, 2009
Games have made their way into the classroom in a multitude of ways to attract and retain students. The academic community has made great strides incorporating games into academic study. Although some have suggested formal links, little work has been done on formalizing how game design can inform instructional design.

Design Games for In-Situ Design

International Journal of Mobile Human Computer Interaction, 2013
The mobile culture has spawned a host of context-based products, like location-based and tag-based applications. This presents a new challenge for the designer. There is a need of design methods that acknowledge the context and allows it to influence the design ideas. This article focuses on a design problem where an in-situ design practice may further
