THE GAMETOPHYTE OF SCHIZAEA DICHOTOMA

American Journal of Botany, 1967
Fourteen collections of gametophytes of Schizaea dichotoma, corresponding to the broadest taxonomic circumscription of the species, are described from New Caledonia. The gametophyte is subterranean, mycorrhizic and non‐green. It is basically filamentous with uniseriate growing points each ending with an apical cell with a single transverse cutting face.

Gametophytic Apomixis: An Introduction

Apomixis, clonal reproduction through seed, is divided into sporophytic (nucellar embryony) and gametophytic apomixis. This book focuses on the latter type. Gametophytic apomixis, while rare, is taxonomically widespread, notably among grasses and Asteraceae. Detection methods have advanced significantly, employing flow cytometry and advanced microscopy

Gametophytic Self-Incompatibility Reexamined

Science, 1983
The conventional hypothesis of gametophytic self-incompatibility in the angiosperms involves one to four multiallelic incompatibility loci and the positive inhibition of incompatible pollen tubes. However, this concept does not accommodate recent experimental data indicating that there may be many loci. An alternative hypothesis which incorporates many

Sporophyte-gametophyte interactions between anther and male gametophyte in petunia

Russian Journal of Plant Physiology, 2009
Sporophyte-gametophyte interactions between anther and male gametophyte were investigated in two (fertile and sterile) clones of petunia (Petunia hybrida L.) with different reproductive strategies. Structural and functional reorganization of sporophyte tissues in the developing anther of fertile clone is closely coordinated with each of the successive ...

Function and Development of Gametophytes

2007
AbstractThe role of flowers is to ensure the transfer of a small but precious package, the pollen grain, from one plant to another. That pollen grain contains the sperm, which fertilizes an egg cell retained within the tissues of another flower, resulting in the formation of a zygote and, in due course, a new generation of plants which will produce ...

Genetics of gametophyte biogenesis in Arabidopsis

Current Opinion in Plant Biology, 2000
The identification of several mutations and genes involved in sporogenesis and gametogenesis has initiated a genetic framework for understanding gametophyte biogenesis. Recent advances include the molecular characterization of genes required for sporocyte formation and meiosis.

Male gametophytic selection in maize

Theoretical and Applied Genetics, 1982
There is evidence that male gametophyte selection is a widespread phenomenon in higher plants. The pollen tube growth rate is one of the main components of gametophyte selective value; genetic variability for this trait, due to the effect of single genes or to quantitative variation, has been described in maize.

STRUCTURE OF THE MALE GAMETOPHYTE IN GYMNOSPERMS

Biological Reviews, 1963
SummaryAnalysis of the morphological nature of the gymnospermous male gametophyte has been based on evidence from fossil gymnosperms, on a comparative survey of living vascular plants, and on ontogeny within the various families of the gymnosperms. Although fossil coniferous and taxad pollen is unknown, the fossil pollen of other gymnosperms is rather ...

Female gametophyte development

Journal of Plant Biology, 2013
Great attention has been drawn toward research on female gametophyte (FG) development, and many mutants have been identified with abnormal formation. Although studies are being conducted on the function and expression of individual regulatory genes, only a few projects have focused on gene regulatory networks.

Development of Flowering Plant Gametophytes

2010
Plant reproduction occurs through the production of gametes by a haploid generation, the gametophyte. Flowering plants have highly reduced male and female gametophytes, called pollen grains and embryo sacs, respectively, consisting of only a few cells.
