Leveraging Grain Boundary Effects for Nanostructured Electrode Layers in Symmetric Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Nanocrystalline thin‐films of lanthanum chromite exhibit extraordinary properties of fast oxygen kinetics. These properties are due to the peculiar chemistry of grain boundaries and can be harnessed for fabricating symmetric electrochemical devices with self‐healing properties. Abstract While grain boundary engineering is attracting great interest as a

Cosmological effects on the observed flux and fluence distributions of gamma-ray bursts: Are the most distant bursts in general the faintest ones? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Several claims have been put forward that an essential fraction of long-duration BATSE gamma-ray bursts should lie at redshifts larger than 5. This point-of-view follows from the natural assumption that fainter objects should, on average, lie at larger redshifts.

AN UPPER BOUND ON NEUTRON STAR MASSES FROM MODELS OF SHORT GAMMA-RAY BURSTS [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The discovery of two neutron stars with gravitational masses ≈ 2 M ⊙ ?> has placed a strong lower limit on the maximum mass of nonrotating neutron stars, and with it a strong constraint on the properties of cold matter beyond nuclear density.

SEARCH FOR PROMPT NEUTRINO EMISSION FROM GAMMA-RAY BURSTS WITH ICECUBE [PDF]

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal, 2014
We present constraints derived from a search of four years of IceCube data for a prompt neutrino flux from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). A single low-significance neutrino, compatible with the atmospheric neutrino background, was found in coincidence with one

Progress and Application of Multifunctional Hydrogel in Radioactive Skin Injury

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
This review examines healing challenges in radiation‐wound injuries, where ionizing radiation impairs immune and tissue repair processes. Hydrogels, with their biocompatibility, antimicrobial properties, and drug delivery capabilities, present a transformative solution. It compares hydrogel efficacy in radiation‐induced versus common wounds, highlights

Phonon Engineering of Micro‐ and Nanophononic Crystals and Acoustic Metamaterials: A Review

open access: yesSmall Science, Volume 3, Issue 1, January 2023., 2023
Phononic crystals and acoustic metamaterials with phonon wave manipulation capabilities have attracted considerable attention. This review summarizes the progress and identifies gaps in phonon engineering at the micro‐ and nanoscales using phononic crystals and metamaterials due to their potential significance in modern electronic applications.

Connecting protein and mRNA burst distributions for stochastic models of gene expression [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The intrinsic stochasticity of gene expression can lead to large variability in protein levels for genetically identical cells. Such variability in protein levels can arise from infrequent synthesis of mRNAs which in turn give rise to bursts of protein expression. Protein expression occurring in bursts has indeed been observed experimentally and recent

Nanohybrid of Silver‐MXene: A Promising Sorbent for Iodine Gas Capture from Nuclear Waste

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Silver‐MXene (Ag‐Ti3C2Tx) nanohybrids effectively captured iodine gas at 150 °C, with Ag nanoparticles loaded onto MXene via silver nitrate reduction. Upon exposure to iodine gas, silver iodide forms, confirming successful adsorption. Ag‐Ti3C2Tx shows superior iodine uptake (946 mg g−1) compared to conventional sorbents, demonstrating its potential as ...

Numerical and Experimental Study of High‐Speed Laser Cutting of Copper Current Collectors: Process Optimization for Quality Assessment

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This study employs a CFD model to simulate laser cutting of copper current collectors used for Li‐Ion battery production. This model predicts cut edge quality by assessing the influence of power, scanner speed, and foil thickness. Defects are classified and an optimal working area is found.
