Lumped Mass Models of Gantry Cranes

2019
This chapter discusses the mathematical modeling of gantry crane systems, considering the subsystems of a crane to be rigid bodies. Such a formulation does not reflect the deflections within the individual parts of the crane but only considers their rigid body movements and results in a lumped mass model (LMM).

Gantry crane control: A simulation case study

2013 2nd Experiment@ International Conference (exp.at'13), 2013
A simulation teaching experiment to control a gantry crane system is proposed. The control is performed both in open-loop and closed-loop. The open-loop control is based on the Posicast feedforward technique and the closed-loop control uses a two-degrees of freedom configuration.

Container Gantry Crane Simulator for Operator Training

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part K: Journal of Multi-body Dynamics, 2005
Real-time simulators have become more popular in the field of user training. This is due to the possibility to give basic training and knowledge of machines and their operation environment to the operator even when the machine is not actually present. The use of simulators instead of actual machines has several advantages.

Gantry cranes

2003
Portal crane (1) for loading and/or unloading a ship having a multiplicity of bays for containers (10) comprising a gantry (2) with travelling gear (5) for supporting the gantry on a quay (13), a boom supported by the gantry made up of a horizontal beam (6) and a jib (7) that during loading and/or unloading is an extension of the beam, and at least one

Flatness based Control of a Gantry Crane

IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 2013
Abstract This contribution deals with flatness based control of a laboratory model of a gantry crane. The mechanical model has 3DOFs, where a trolley can be moved on a rail, the load is fixed at the end of a rope and can be lifted or lowered by coiling or uncoiling this rope on a cylinder.

Double-pendulum gantry crane dynamics and control

Proceedings of the 1998 IEEE International Conference on Control Applications (Cat. No.98CH36104), 2002
Payload manipulation using gantry cranes presents a challenging control problem because of the inherent system flexibility. If the crane is equipped with a large-mass hook and the payload is sufficiently small, then the problem is complicated because the crane can exhibit double-pendulum dynamics.

Premature failure of steel gantry crane wheels

Journal of Failure Analysis and Prevention, 2004
A metallurgical failure analysis was performed on a set of carbon steel gantry crane wheels following observation of excessive damage to the central tread surfaces. Rolling contact fatigue was considered as a possible failure mechanism due to the presence of what appeared to be spalling.

Hybrid Robust Control for Gantry Crane System

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2010
A new hybrid control scheme combining input shaping technique with robust sliding mode control is proposed for a gantry crane system. A cascade sliding-mode controller is designed to control the trolley position and eliminate the sway of load. The transient vibration is reduced further for safety problems by the input shaping technique which utilizes ...

Gantry Crane Dynamic Modeling and Motion Control

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2013
In this paper, a new anti-swing control scheme is proposed for a three dimensional gantry crane. The proposed control is based on linear two optimum output regulation technology. The proposed control guarantees not only prompt suppression of load swing but also accurate control of crane position for simultaneous travel, traverse, and hoisting motions ...
