Does thinning-induced gap size result in altered soil microbial community in pine plantation in eastern Tibetan Plateau? [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol, 2017
Although the effects of gap formation resulting from thinning on microclimate, plant generation and understory plant community have been well documented, the impact of thinning on soil microbial community and related ecological functions of forests ...

On permutation patterns with constrained gap sizes [PDF]

open access: yesAustralas. J Comb., 2020
We consider avoidance of permutation patterns with designated gap sizes between pairs of consecutive letters. We call the patterns having such constraints distant patterns (DPs) and we show their relation to other pattern notions investigated in the past. New results on DPs with 2 and 3 letters are obtained.

Machine Learning Model Sizes and the Parameter Gap

open access: yesCoRR, 2022
We study trends in model size of notable machine learning systems over time using a curated dataset. From 1950 to 2018, model size in language models increased steadily by seven orders of magnitude. The trend then accelerated, with model size increasing by another five orders of magnitude in just 4 years from 2018 to 2022.

Rank Gaps and the Size of the Core for Roommate Problems [PDF]

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2017
This paper deals with roommate problems (Gale and Shapley, 1962) that are solvable, i.e., have a non-empty core (set of stable matchings). We study the assortativeness of stable matchings and the size of the core by means of maximal and average rank gaps.

Effects of gap size, gap age, and bamboo Fargesia denudata on Abies faxoniana recruitment in South-western China

open access: yesForest Systems, 2015
Aim of study: to study the effects of gap size, gap age and bamboo Fargesia denudata on natural regeneration of Abies faxoniana, both of which are the ubiquitous dominants in our research area.

Retrieving Leaf Area Index (LAI) Using Remote Sensing: Theories, Methods and Sensors

open access: yesSensors, 2009
The ability to accurately and rapidly acquire leaf area index (LAI) is an indispensable component of process-based ecological research facilitating the understanding of gas-vegetation exchange phenomenon at an array of spatial scales from the leaf to the

Characterization of Physical Gap Sizes at Human Telomeres [PDF]

open access: yesGenome Research, 1999
Genome-wide physical and genetic mapping efforts have not yet fully addressed the problem of closure at the telomeric ends of human chromosomes. Targeted efforts at cloning human and mouse telomeres have succeeded in identifying unique sequences at most telomeres, but gap sizes between these telomere clones and the distal markers on integrated genetic ...

Improved gap size estimation for scaffolding algorithms [PDF]

open access: yesBioinformatics, 2012
Abstract Motivation: One of the important steps of genome assembly is scaffolding, in which contigs are linked using information from read-pairs. Scaffolding provides estimates about the order, relative orientation and distance between contigs.

Accuracy of total knee arthroplasty using the modified gap technique based on the bone gap: an evaluation of the bone gap with a distal femoral trial component

open access: yesArthroplasty, 2021
Background In total knee arthroplasty (TKA) using the modified gap technique, the soft-tissue balance is measured after osteotomy of the distal femur and proximal tibia (conventional bone gap).

Size-Dependent Gender Gaps in Entrepreneurship: The Case of Chile*

open access: yesLatin American Economic Review, 2022
This paper documents differences in firm size depending on whether their manager is a man or a woman and studies the aggregate implications of these gender gaps in Chile. We document that in 2007 less than a quarter of firms are managed by women and that this gap takes its largest value for managers with tertiary education or more.
