Harnessing Fungal Biowelding for Constructing Mycelium‐Engineered Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mycelium‐bound composites (MBCs) offer low‐carbon alternatives for construction, yet interfacial bonding remains a critical challenge. This review examines fungal biowelding as a biocompatible adhesive, elucidating mycelium‐mediated interfacial mechanisms and their role in material assembly. Strategies to optimize biowelding are discussed, highlighting

Application of Active Soil Gas Screening for the Identification of Groundwater Contamination with Chlorinated Hydrocarbons at an Industrial Area—A Case Study of the Former Refrigerator Manufacturer Calex (City of Zlaté Moravce, Western Slovakia)

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Background: Groundwater contamination with chlorinated hydrocarbons (CLHCs), particularly with tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and trichloroethylene (TCE), which are used in industry for degreasing and cleaning, can be considered a serious problem concerning ...

SURVEY ON THE PRESENCE OF POLYCHLOROBIPHENYLS (PCBs) ON FISHES OF PIEDILUCO LAKE (TERNI, CENTRAL ITALY)

open access: yesItalian Journal of Food Safety, 2013
During the period 2004-2006, 254 specimen belonging to Ciprinidae, Percidae and Anguillidae fishes of Piediluco Lake were analyzed by gas chromatography to check for the presence of PCBs contamination. Data obtained show low level of contamination with a

Double gloves reduce contamination of dry box atmosphere [PDF]

open access: yes, 1965
Pair of encased low permeability hand gloves between which an inert gas circulates reduces dry box contamination. This innovation is applicable to dry boxes using radioactive and alkali metal compounds, submicron powders, and liquid ...

Low‐Cost, Large‐Scale Nanoporous Metals by Mechanical Alloying, Oxide Reduction, and Dealloying of Powders

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Powder metal processing provides scalable advantages in nanoporous (np) metal development. Mechanical alloying is used to produce unique precursors for hybrid nanopore formation by oxide reduction and dealloying. As demonstrated in np Ag, this approach improves process efficiency while promoting smaller ligaments and larger pores, both of which are ...

Towards a liquid Argon TPC without evacuation: filling of a 6 m^3 vessel with argon gas from air to ppm impurities concentration through flushing

open access: yes, 2010
In this paper we present a successful experimental test of filling a volume of 6 m$^3$ with argon gas, starting from normal ambient air and reducing the impurities content down to few parts per million (ppm) oxygen equivalent. This level of contamination

Interactions between Molten High‐Silicon Electrical Steels and Carbon‐Bonded MgO Refractories Based on Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study examines how several molten high‐silicon electrical steels interact with both conventional and recycled MgO–C refractories. For this, various immersion experiments are conducted. In addition to infiltration, a number of mechanisms are identified and explained that control the corrosion of the refractory material.

Dark Molecular Gas in Simulations of z~0 Disc Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The $\rm H_2$ mass of molecular clouds has traditionally been traced by the CO(J=1-0) rotational transition line. This said, CO is relatively easily photodissociated, and can also be destroyed by cosmic rays, thus rendering some fraction of molecular gas

Interaction between Molten Al‐Killed Mn–B Steel and Carbon‐Bonded MgO Refractories Based on Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
High‐temperature interactions between low‐sulfur Al‐killed Mn–B steel and MgO–C refractories (0 and 50 wt% recyclates) are studied via finger immersion tests (1600 °C). Surface‐active elements influence infiltration. MgO/CaS layer forms, along with spinel and calcium silicate.
